SEVERAL of the area’s leading athletes were in winning form at the Peterborough City Games on Monday.
Six of the seven locals who made the podium at this year’s English Schools Championships were in action and all of them tasted victory.
Jonathan Edwards, who took silver in the shot in Gateshead two months ago, produced his 10th shot, discus, hammer treble of the year and his third at the Embankment Track.
He also won all three events at the Peterborough Athletic Club Open and the National Junior League at the same venue.
Max Everest, who struck gold in the sprint hurdles in Gateshead, competed for the first time since making his England debut at the British Schools International. He moved up an age group to tackle the 110m hurdles and romped home by almost four seconds.
English Schools shot bronze medallist Simi Pam boasts a perfect six out of six record at her home track this year. Watched by coach Geoff Capes, she recorded her fifth shot success there - adding to wins in two East Anglian League fixtures, the Southern League and the Cambridgeshire Schools - and she also won the discus in the Southern League.
The three locals who helped Cambridgeshire take bronze in the 4x100m in Gateshead were also in winning form.
PAC pair Alex McNally and Ashley Watson took the Under 20 men’s 200m and 400m respectively while Hunts ace Ryan Palmer relegated Watson into second place in the 100m.
Former English Schools long jump champion Joel Grenfell returned to action following the hamstring injury that forced him to miss Gateshead.
He stumbled out of the blocks in the opening heat of the Under 17 men’s 100m - which was won by 2010 English Schools 400m silver medallist Jake Berney - and decided not to risk his hamstring injury giving chase so dropped out.
He later won the long jump, using a short run-up and reduced speed.
Another PAC member to have struggled with injury this year is Georgia Woods but she was in superb form to record a personal best (PB) of 39.79m when winning the Under 17 women’s javelin by almost 12 metres and she could yet go beyond 40m before the season is out.
Jenna Mohan won two events and was not far outside her week-old javelin PB while Nene Valley clubmate Emma Hornsby also recorded two wins in the Under 17 women’s age group.
With the meeting coming just a week after Peterborough Athletic Club had clinched the Southern League Division Two title there were several members of the host club looking to celebrate in style - men’s captain Matthew Dalton winning the 110m hurdles despite a spectacular fall.
Steph Hendy and Rachel Stone were unbeaten in the hammer and steeplechase respectively in the Southern League this year and both tasted victory on their home track.
Kelly Sutton won the 100m and 400m while Nichola Gibson, second in the former, took the 200m.
There was also a family double for Nene Valley’s Morgan family in the 3000m, Lee winning the men’s race by two seconds and wife Nicky easily taking the women’s honours.
