DEEPING hurdler Julz Adeniran started his indoor campaign in superb style on Saturday, recording his fastest ever season-opener.

The British international, who hopes to earn selection for the Olympics this year, won both rounds of the 60m hurdles at the Loughborough Students Open Meeting in 7.93 and 7.87 - just three hundredths of a second outside his personal best.

He said: “It was my fastest ever season-opener and I got a pair of wins so it was a great start to 2012.

“After five months of ‘cold turkey’, Saturday marked my first race outing of the season and I chose a low-key meet to blow away the cobwebs and focus on some technical points but in a race environment.

“The result was encouraging. The first race was a little tentative and the second quite sloppy, as was to be expected, but it compared favourably with last year’s results in my season opener at the same meeting - 8.04 and 8.03.”

JAMIE Horne of Peterborough Athletic Club added one centimetre to his week-old personal best (PB) to share second place at the South of England Indoor Championships at Lee Valley.

Horne leapt 1.65m while clubmates Alex McNally, Ashley Watson and Jake Berney all reached semi-finals on the track.

McNally won his heat of the Under 20 men’s 60m and equalled his PB of 7.07 when finishing third in his semi-final. Ryan Palmer, who had also won his heat where clubmate Hugh Thorogood ran a PB of 7.53, broke his own Hunts Athletic Club record when clocking exactly seven seconds for second place in his semi-final and he went on to place fifth in the final. He was faster than his old record in all three rounds.

Clubmate Jonathan Edwards was fourth in the senior men’s shot.
