How you can join the Great Eastern runners

THIS year’s Great Eastern Run promises to be bigger and better than ever – as not only will the winner receive a cheque for £750, they could also be in the chance of winning a Chrysler Jeep supplied by the city’s Marshall dealership.

The run was officially launched in a ceremony held outside Peterborough Town Hall earlier this month, when the city council’s chief executive, Gillian Beasley, and council deputy leader Matthew Lee were joined by local running club members, race sponsors and last year’s marathon winner, Neil Addison, to promote the fact entries to the race are now being accepted.

Race director Stuart Hamilton said runners should register now to guarantee themselves a place.

He said: “The Perkins Great Eastern Run grows in popularity every year and attracts interest from across the country.

“This year, we hope to attract more runners than ever, as it promises to be a fantastic event.

“We would like to thank our sponsors who have already pledged to help us make the 2010 race extra special.

“I am delighted that Perkins Engines Company Ltd has signed up again as principal supporter, and we have also secured invaluable help from Adidas, Advance Performance, Sainsbury, Fitzwilliam Hospital, the Park Inn hotel, ChromaSport and Trophies and Marshall Peterborough.”

The Great Eastern half marathon and fun run was revived by Peterborough City Council in 2006 after a 10-year break, and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Councillor Matthew Lee, the council’s cabinet member for culture, said: “The Perkins Great Eastern Run is particularly special this year for the fact that 10 is the key number. It will certainly be a date to remember.

“I hope the people of Peterborough turn out in their droves to support the runners again this year.

“It is a truly fantastic event and a great way to raise money for charity.

“We are staging the Schools’ Challenge again, in which school teams can compete in the fun run to raise the most money for charity.

“Our nominated charity is Anna’s Hope, which supports children with brain tumours. However they can raise money for whichever charity they choose.

“The half marathon attracts people from all walks of life – from elite athletes and club runners to those running their first ever half marathon.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for first-timers to get themselves fit and achieve a fantastic personal goal.”
