OUNDLE School’s outstanding all-rounder Jess Varley has recently been in winning form at two sports.

The 16 year-old, who is a member of Peterborough Athletic Club and a very promising pentathlete, won a county fencing title and then finished first in a county qualifying cross-country race.

Varley led an Oundle School one-two when they hosted the Northamptonshire County Youth Epee Championships.

Varley took gold in the Under 18 girls section with the silver medal going to Marlena Mohamed Razali.

The other four Oundle pupils in action all picked up medals, Herman Leing taking silver and Alexander Richardson bronze in the Under 14 boys section with Marcus Leung and Jake Blackmore collecting the bronze medals in the Under 16 boys age group.

Edmund Corker of Laxton Junior School was another local to get a medal, taking bronze in the Under 12 boys section.

Oundle coach Chris Howser, the 2005 British champion and organiser of the event, was delighted with the performance of his pupils, as was head of girls’ games at Oundle, Leti Brighton. She said: “This bodes well for the next step of the competition, the East Midlands Qualifier for the British Youth Championships on February 5 at Oundle, and we hope to see school fencers achieve the same success there.”

Varley was again in winning form as five Oundle School pupils represented Wellingborough and East Northamptonshire in the county cross-country qualifiers.

She won the Under 19 girls race while Ruby Goodall (12) was runner-up in the Under 15 girls race. Johnnie Bland (17) and Charlie Hutchinson (16) finished fourth and fifth respectively in the Under 19 boys race while Harry Reynolds (15) was ninth in the Under 17 boys race.

The girls cross-country team finished third out of 29 teams in the Knole Run at Sevenoaks School.

Sophie Reynolds (17) finished eighth, Tash Crawford (14) was 21st, Emily Gladstone (17) 30th and Bryony Whitaker (18) just behind in 31st.
