Several local athletes were on their way to Gateshead today (Thursday) for the big English Schools Track & Field Championships in tip-top shape.

The huge two-day meet, which is the fourth biggest athletics meeting in the world, takes place tomorrow and Saturday and brings together the cream of the crop from all over the country at Under 15, Under 17 and Under 20 level .

Our top runners, jumpers and throwers from Peterborough Athletic Club and Nene Valley Harriers are competing for either Cambridgeshire or Lincolnshire and some are genuine medal prospects.

Ella De Lucis from Stanground College will be bursting with confidence after setting two championship best performances last time out at the Eastern Counties Championships in Cambridge.

The PAC member and Birchfield Harrier won the 100m in 12.4 and the 100m hurdles in 14.7.

She goes in the 100m hurdles in Gateshead and is ranked eighth in the UK with a personal best of 14.48.

Also from PAC, Daniel Mees (Under 17 800m) and Megan Sims (Under 17 300m hurdles) were winners at the Eastern Counties Championships and Sims’ PB of 45.06 should stand her in good stead.

Lincolnshire have 10 Nene Valley Harriers in their team and several are in red-hot form.

Jasmine Allen was a winner in the Under 15 long jump at Cambridge and also set a PB in the 200m of 26.2 while Megan Ellison won the Under 15 800m in a new PB of 2.15.93.

Under 17 thrower Lydia Church won gold, silver and bronze medals at the Eastern Counties Championships to set herself up nicely for Gateshead as did Isaac Huskisson with a win in the Under 20 hammer.

Shot-putters Robbie Shaw and Hannah Molyneaux, both coached by Geoff Capes, are the strongest medal contenders for Lincolnshire.

Shaw, from Bourne Grammar School, is ranked eighth in the UK at Under 20 level while Molyneaux, based in Lincoln, is number one in the UK Under 15 rankings.
