Can Galpin add to his win tally?

THE penultimate race of the Frostbite League takes place at Bourne on Sunday and the standard of the league is arguably better than ever.

England international Aaron Scott has won three of this winter’s races in the colours of second-claim club Nene Valley Harriers and with former Welsh steeplechase champion Sullivan Smith of Cambridge and Coleridge also now competing it is a lot harder to win these races than it has been in previous years.

Indeed, the league’s most successful ever runner - Pete Galpin of BRJ - admits he will be hard-pushed to add to his tally of 36 wins.

Galpin finished 14th in last month’s Frostbite League race at March, which was a fine comeback after nearly two years out with a career-threatening Achilles injury that required an operation.

He had won on his last Frostbite League outing on his home BRJ course in March 2009 when he led home Matt Grace (Bourne) and Nick Grimer (Nene Valley).

Galpin clocked 26.21 for the five-mile course that day but after two years out and having now turned 40, he admits: “It’s getting harder to win Frostbite League races now.

“The quality of the runners has improved and races are regularly being won in 25 or 26 minutes.”

Even if he never wins another Frostbite League race, Galpin has a record to be proud about.

The table of leading all-time Frostbite League runners (right) - based on three points for a win, two for a second and one for a third - sees the former British duathlon international 65 points clear of his nearest rival - Riverside Runner Alan Turnbull.
