ATHLETICS: Harriers youngsters off to a promising start

Nene Valley Harriers' youngsters are on track for more success after a pleasing first leg of the Eastern Young Athletes League.

The talented squad finished third in the season’s opener on Sunday (April 17), with only the 2015 league champions Bedford and host club Ipswich finishing ahead of them.

Harriers boasted many individual winners and the Under 17 throwers were in dominant form. Between them Lydia Church and Priscilla Dadziea won the girls A and B shot and discus events, with Church also triumphant in the hammer.

Charles Hughes and Kai Harrison completed a double for the boys in the shot.

Megan Ellison continued her winning ways in the 300m and 800m while Ellie Piccaver won the B 1500m.

Rosie Fresen picked up valuable points when winning the 80m hurdles and pole vault, and there were firsts for long jumper Jasmine Allen and Shannon Hodgson in the 80m hurdles B race.

Josh Akinwumi won the Under 17 boys 100m hurdles with a personal best 13.7 clocking, while William Hughes finished first in the 200m as did Robert Hayes in the B 400m.

The Under 15s and Under 13s also enjoyed success, and middle distance ace Flo Brill took the honours in the Under 13 B discus as well as the 1500m.

Eleven year-old Lottie Hemmings won the B 800m in 2:49.8, much to the pleasure of her father, the Nene Valley legend Lance Hemmings.

Jose Downer was first over the line in the 200m and Danielle Pusey had the best javelin throw of the day.

Amber Park and Ella Robinson took the A and B 300m and 800m honours, and Elyis Constanzo won the B high jump.

For the boys, Callum Robertson and James Marsh won the shot and the B 200m respectively.

Coach Russ Prosser was quick to praise the dedication of his squad, with many athletes taking part in multiple events to boost the scoring potential of the team.
