CHRISTIAN Roberts of Hunts Athletic Club went agonisingly close to winning the Under 20 400m hurdles at the South of England Championships at Watford. He missed the gold medal by four hundredths of a second after hitting the final barrier and had to settle for silver with a personal best of 54.57.
The 18 year-old, an impressive winner of the senior boys 800m at the Cambridgeshire Schools Championships a week earlier, had finished his last exam the previous day and was up early on Saturday to cruise through the heats, winning in 56.35.
In the final he got off to a slow start and was back in fifth place at the halfway stage. He was still 10 metres adrift coming into the final straight but finished strongly and was closing on Belgrave Harrier Matt Threadgold with every stride.
He made a valiant effort to snatch the gold medal only to miss out by the narrowest of margins.
Nene Valley Harriers club record-holder Andrea Jenkins was within a metre of a medal in the hammer, throwing 47.79m.
