CITY angler Jonathan Taylor has been picked to fish for his country.Following weekend England Youth trials at the well known Barston Fishery, Taylor was included in the England Under 22 side to compete in the World Youth Championships in Ghent, Belgium, on July 26 and 27.
The Sensas Mark One angler has already fished for his country and is expected to make a good showing on a venue that should suit his style.
THERE were some really big fish taken off the River Nene during the first week of the season topped by Steve Teeson who took a massive 15lb 4oz barbel.
Fishing a big hair rigged pellet over a bed of pellet and hemp on the river above Wansford he caught the huge fish before first light on Sunday morning.
ASHTON high bank was the venue for Oundle AS members fishing the Opening Shield match which saw Mark Cunnington take first place with four tench and small fish taken on red maggot and pinkie to record 14lb 14oz.
Runner-up Joe Brudenell put 10lb 11oz to the scales which included a 6lb 6oz tench, all taken on worm. Malc Cunnington took third place with an all roach catch for 5lb.
Sunday saw the members fish the Branfoot Cup from Handgate to Black Bridge, where high winds hampered sport.
Roger Lee fished pole and pinkie to claim first place with 5lb 10oz followed by Alan Smith (4lb 8oz) and Troy Cunnington junior (1lb 12oz).
THE first round of the Kings of the Fens was knocked off course due to the high winds sweeping across the fens and weights were much lower than had been predicted on the North Level Drain.
Match-winner Andrew Page was the only angler to break into double figures. The MAP Peterborough-backed rod relied on a waggler and maggot approach to take a bream, a decent tench and a few smaller samples to weigh in 10lb 2oz.

THE North Bank of the River Nene produced one of its worst match results I can ever remember at the weekend. In fact, there was nothing to gain for the teams fishing the Team Championship final in a couple of weeks time as a howling downstream wind prevented all but a few fishing a long pole line.
Most relied on fishing the margins or a small feeder to attract a few small samples.
Way out in front with three bream taken on the tip was Saints rod Jimmy Hines. He drew in the 70s and weighed in 7lb 8oz.
Result: 1 J. Hines, Saints, 7lb 8oz; 2 L. Kerry, Maver Barnsley, 1lb 14oz; 3 P. Hughes, Saints, 1lb 13oz; 4 N. Faulkner, Chester Tackle Locker, 1lb 11oz.
IT would seem that the upper sections above Peterborough were no better and in the Deeping St James club match several anglers failed to trouble the scalesman.Fishing a short pole at peg 12 Bourne angler Tom Decamp put together a mixed bag to take top spot with a weight of 3lb 2oz.
Graham Wright was a close runner- up with 2lb 13oz and Ray Gregory filled third place with 2lb 9oz.
BLACKHAM was the venue for the first fixture of the Yaxley/Holme and DAC season, which saw competitors fishing for the Gorham Cup in a running line only match.
Because of the strong downstream wind Paul Marriott opted for a swingtip to improve presentation in the middle. Fishing a worm and red maggot cocktail he managed to put a winning 7lb 9oz to the scales, including a bream and tench.
It was a Marriott one-two as Paul pushed his father Ivan into second place with 4lb 11oz of roach, skimmers and a bonus tench, alternating between waggler and quivertip. Lionel Whaley took third place with 4lb 9oz.
WHITTLESEY members found clear water and a slight flow at Enfields Bridge and on a dull and overcast Saturday Andy Bull took the honours with 8lb 12oz, two tench and four roach on the pole with casters.
Andy Lawrence took the runner-up spot with 4lb 12oz followed by Paul Wright with 3lb 15oz.
Earlier in the week their juniors had an early start to the season fishing on the second day on Whittlesey Dyke at the rear of Queensway.
With a net of small roach taken on the pole with pinkie Curtis Warner took top spot with 14oz. Similar tactics saw Sam Boon into second place with 11oz and Jason Wilson was third with 7oz.
FOX Match Stanjay rod Hans Schumann took the honours in the Tydd Gote Thursday evening match held at Main Road with 6lb 14oz of small fish with roach to four ounces taken on a pole and maggot approach. Runner-up Andy Lawrence finished with 5lb 14oz.
TAKING skimmers and roach on a pole and pinkie approach saw Andy Greenwood record 6lb 14oz in Tydd Gote's Sunday match which was also fished at Main Road.
Runner-up was Colin Gibbons with 4lb 14oz followed by Andy Lawrence on 4lb 13oz.

BREAM showed up on the Fotheringhay section of the River Nene for the Warmington lads fishing for the Chairman's Cup.
Top rod was Brian Sanders who weighed in a fine 34lb 4oz net all taken on the feeder with red maggot.
Runner-up was Nev Lenton who had three big tench for 11lb 8oz followed by Pip Baines and Martin Halton, who both had 2lb 7oz.
CONTINUING his good run of form, match-winner John Smith mastered the blustery conditions in the latest OAP match on Magpie Lake at Pidley taking 79lb 1oz.
Fishing luncheon meat and dog meat at two metres from peg 20 he took 20 barbel and tench to 4lb with the remainder of his catch made up of carp.
Second place went to Pete Norris with 60lb with John Etherington third on 49lb 5oz.WHAT a match the Fenland Rod lads enjoyed on Four Islands and Lou's Lake on the Decoy complex.
This pairs match saw Tim Bates drawn on fancied peg four on Four Islands and his partner Kevin Lee drawn on what is known as the best peg on Lou's, peg seven, making it a foregone conclusion as to who was going to win!
So it proved to be, Bates taking 150lb up in the water on maggot and caster and Lee netting 83lb 8oz on paste at eight metres.
Second were Neil Garner with 81lb and Matthew Lutkin on 67lb. Third pair were Dave Garner and Bill Foster with a combined weight of 134lb.
PETERBOROUGH rod Martin Howard has a liking for Fields End Water after taking the top spot again in the Thursday evening match.
Fishing pole with pellet and paste the Wades MG rod landed 25lb 4oz of carp to see off the challenge of local angler Graham Dean, who finished second with 22lb. Third was Mark One rod Simon Godfrey (19lb 10oz).
Heavy feeding with pellets in the margins paid dividends for Steve Freeman who won the latest JVAC match on Decoy's Elm Lake with 72lb 4oz.
Fishing tight to the bank at peg 18, Freeman alternated between his left and right-hand swims, using pellet on the hook and feeding nearly eight pints in total. Not too far behind was Adrian Wylde from peg 23 with 64lb oz.
Result: 1 Steve Freeman 72lb 4oz; 2 Adrian Wylde 64lb 4oz; 3 Daniel Smith 57lb 12oz; 4 Kevin Wilmot 48lb 8oz.
THE in-form Dave Arbon drew the end peg furthest away from the car park at Magpie Lake at Pidley in the Allsorts AC match at the weekend and took full advantage fishing the top three of his pole close in to land carp to 4lb on pellet feeding hemp and micro pellet putting 57lb 2oz to the scales.
Malc Sanders was second with 45lb 8oz, Lee Covell third (40lb 14oz) and Paul Dotchin fourth (40lb 11oz).
ON a fishery full to capacity, city rod John Whincup rounded off an excellent weekend on the Beastie Lake at Decoy.
After finishing runner-up in Saturday's match, he scooped the top spot on Sunday putting 144lb 8oz to the scales.
Fishing peg 19 the Fox Match Van den Eynde-backed rod fished his usual pellet up in the water approach to catch F1s steadily all day.
