Angling: Parsons bags huge 185lb to win down on the Farm
A poor weekend of weather did little to dampen the spirits of the JVAC lads on their annual weekend at Doddington Reservoir and Crockwell Farm.
A poor weekend of weather did little to dampen the spirits of the JVAC lads on their annual weekend at Doddington Reservoir and Crockwell Farm.Day one on Doddingtons should have been a fish race with huge weights recorded but once again the pegs booked were changed at the last minute and the club found themselves well away from the action.
Paul Wright started the weekend off in fine style though. He put 41lb 9oz to the scales on the Method feeder to take first place. Chris Smith came second on 32lb 7oz followed by Tom Parker on 28lb 5oz.
Day two saw some much better sport for some of the lads, Dave Parsons bagging a massive 185lb 12oz to take a comfortable victory. Adrian Wylde came second on 105lb 15oz followed by Dave Pearson with 101lb 9oz.
After two days, Parsons and Wright tied for the top spot on six points apiece, but Parsons took the honours with a big weight advantage.
Horseshoe Lake at Decoy was the venue for the Webb's AC match which saw Nick Carlton well ahead of the field putting a fine 101lb 7oz to the scales from peg four. He took his fish on pellet and sweetcorn. Paul Rayner came second on 61lb 8oz followed by Allan Coulson with 57lb 14oz.
Also on the Decoy complex were Cock Inn AC. They fished a windswept Cedar Pool down on the new strips and did remarkably well considering the conditions.
In fact, it was a close match with the experienced Mick Sydney just easing home with 36lb 8oz of small carp and barbel taken on the pole with sweetcorn. Steve Smith came in second on 32lb 8oz followed by Andy Brown with 31lb 2oz.
It's good to see a few of our local clubs venturing a little further afield to try different waters. Dents Fishery at Hilgay produced good weights in a recent Brotherhood's match.
Ian Wells came out on top with 57lb 14oz. He had a real mixed bag of skimmers, crucians, rudd and carp. Steve Stones came second with a net of rudd taken shallow with maggot weighing in a level 37lb followed by Brian Spence on 34lb 9oz.
On Sunday Fenland Rods saw a few brollies damaged and I suspect the odd pole broken too as the wind really got up and it rained very heavily for more than half of the match at Fields End Fishery, Doddington.
I was present for this one and although it was wet and pretty miserable most of us had a few bites. I managed a respectable 25lb of small fish but it was Clive Fisher who topped the strong field with 52lb 11oz. He fished the feeder with paste and pellet. Neil Garner came second with 50lb 4oz followed by Dick Warrener on 43lb 8oz.
At long last it looks as if the Rookery Farm Fishery at Pidley has started to run into form.
Looking at the Ramsey AS result it would seem most of the anglers had a good day's sport. Paul Kilby took the honours from peg one, putting a net of small carp to the scales for a winning 68lb 4oz.
Runner-up with a level 52lb was Roy Whincup followed by Pete Holland on 36lb.
The club have one match to fish on stillwaters before they switch back to the fenland drains. That will be fished this weekend back at Rookery Farm on the Magpie Lake. With spawning only just over and slightly cooler weather arriving few could have expected any really big weights in the midweek open on the new strips at Decoy.
But the lakes sprang to life with carp showing on all the pools.
Way out in front with a massive 261lb was VDE rod Tony Dawson. He drew on the Elm Pool and fished at six metres using 6ml soft pellet on the hook and feeding small pellet by hand.
Result: 1 T. Dawson, VDE 261lb; 2 N. Baxter, Bag- Em, 160lb 4oz; 3 T. Wallace, Decoy; 151lb 15oz.
Decoy Lakes Opens
Beastie Lake, Tuesday: 1 S. Smith, Bag Em, 58lb 5oz; 2 A. Edgley, Chatteris, 57lb 7oz; 3 S. Dow, Decoy, 56lb 9oz.
Beastie Lake, Sunday: 1 S. Smith, Bag Em, 95lb 8oz; 2 G. Whitwell, Decoy, 76lb 13oz; 3 N. Baxter, Bag Em, 76lb.
