Quite a few local clubs have all but finished their fixtures for this year but there are several winter leagues planned to replace them.

It’s hardly winter weather though which was good news on Sunday for those lucky enough to get into the very successful Decoy Winter League run by March rod Barry Mason.

Fished on the prolific Beastie Lake, the first round honours went to the in-form John Whincup.

He started on a small feeder over to the island and caught well, netting carp to 5lb. At the half-way mark he switched to a straight lead for a few more fish, but it was the short pole line with red maggot that did the trick as he finished on 91lb 10oz.

Runner-up was Simon Godfrey, who fished the long pole with maggot for 70lb 11oz. Third was Chris Barley on 70lb 8oz.
