The fly did the trick and within seconds of his retrieve he had a big hit on the fly. Several minutes past without a sign of the fish coming up in the water as it took more and more line.

A forty minute tussle eventually saw the 20lb plus pike netted, a real beauty which was returned to the water safely.

I have got to mention my mate Dave Williams who fished his first ever commercial water carp match on Sunday.

We had a very, very long session in the shop talking about tackle and tactics and to my amazement he was like a duck to water. He breezed through the Ramsey AS club match on the Magpie Pool at Pidley coming fifth in a very strong field with 93lb.

More praise now for England Ladies star angler Abbi Kendall, who put in yet another fine performance on the long pole and later with maggots into the margins to win the match with 146lb 14oz.

In second place was Josh Pace catching up in the water and weighing in 129lb 12oz, then came Alex Bates on 127lb 12oz.
