Local lass Kendall secures a world championship slot

The March angler has been in fine form producing some stunning performances at our local venues and it was topped off at the weekend with news that once again she will be representing England at the World Ladies Championships in Spain in late August.

The venue is the Guadiana River, which was used in 2012 for the European Championships when England’s men finished in silver medal position.

Unfortunately, the teams do not receive any government funding and have to rely on the generosity of the public. So please support our ladies with any donations and help by buying raffle tickets at their fund-raising events.

Abbi is doing her bit for the team by running an evening series at Rookery Waters, Pidley, to raise some funds for the England ladies team.

She said: “It’s nothing too serious - just a bit of fun to try and get some funds in the pot to help the ladies get to Spain”.

The first match will be held on May 27 with the draw taking place between 4.45pm and 5pm.

FERRY MEADOWS

It’s amazing what a spell of warm weather does to the sport around the area, particularly the local stillwaters.

Lots of anglers were out on the banks and all seemed to be enjoying the action.

The one disappointment at the weekend was Ferry Meadows.

For a long time now anglers have been catching huge weights of bream from both Gunwade and Overton Lakes, but the hot sunny weather coupled with next to no breeze on the water saw weights much lower than expected as the bream refused to feed in any numbers.

Andy Ellis put together a very well run sell-out match and I am sure anglers will still be queuing up to fish when the next match comes around.

Match-winner on the day was Sheffield rod Dave Lawrence. He has been making the trip down to the lakes for several years now and he has a vast knowledge of the waters and he put it to good use on a difficult day.

Drawn on Overton peg seven, he fished long range feeder tactics with red maggot and worm hookbait to comfortably take the honours with a fine 117lb 6oz.

Runner-up was Ed Warren on Gunwade peg 50 with 43lb 9oz closely followed by the top local rod Mike Kirby with 39lb from peg 48.

DEEPING ST JAMES

What a way to start the new season for the Deeping St James anglers in the first round of the Knockout Tournament and the Club Cup which was held at their continually improving Horseshoe Lake near Wansford.

The club have put a lot of time and effort into the fishery along with several healthy re-stockings and it looks as if all the hard work over the last six years is coming to fruition.

Top rod on the day was Antony Johnson, who put in a superb performance on the pole with pellet fished up in the water netting carp into double figures to finish on 140lb 12 oz from peg 40.

Runner-up was Alan Jopling fishing a cage feeder with punched bread to the far bank and taking an all-carp weight of 76lb.

Third was Nigel Collis, who took the majority of his fish from the margins on banded corn for 57lb 14oz.
