King rules on the Horsehoe at Decoy Lakes
It’s been some time since Mick King made his mark in a JVAC event, but on Sunday he showed his true class at Decoy Lakes.
Fishing Horseshoe Lake peg five, King fished long pole with 4mm expander pellet with very little feed just putting a few 3mms and 4mms every drop-in.
The fish came steadily all day which saw him finish on 50lb 3oz, just ahead of runner-up Shane Coton on a level 50lb.
Sport was very consistent on the Four Island Pool in the second half of the JVAC event, Alan Warren putting a fine 60lb 14oz net of carp to the scales.
He started on pellets at five metres and caught well for two hours, after which he had to move out, eventually finishing up at 11 metres to keep the fish coming.
Runner-up on this pool was Andy Gausden with 57lb 5oz.
After the match the draw was made for the semi-final of the club knockout. It’s just the big guns left in the event which sees Andy Gausden against Jim Regan and Dave Parsons taking on Kevin Wilmot.
n I did not think the frost was too severe on Saturday night yet several waters around the area had a thin covering of ice that anglers had to clear before fishing.
That was certainly the case for anglers fishing the latest sweepstake at Haddon Lodge Fishery last Sunday, but their efforts were rewarded. They found the fish more than willing to feed with double-figure weights taking the first three places.
Drawn at peg 13 and battling with floating ice, Peterborough angler Alan Forrest repeated his win from the same peg the previous week, taking top spot with an 18lb 8oz - an all carp catch including a 9lb 8oz specimen. All fell to single red maggot.
Fishing the feeder from peg 19 saw Tony Moules into second place with 13lb 15oz followed by Terry Mote with 12lb 1oz.
n Winter conditions could not have been much better for the Whittlesey AA anglers on Saturday lining the banks of the Carrot Wash section just upstream of Ponders Bridge.
Sitting in the preferred tench peg, John Hudson struggled for bites early on and went out for the bigger fish knowing they normally show at that end of the stretch.
And his tactics paid off with three tench to 3lb 8oz and a few decent perch to finish a clear winner with 12lb 10oz - all caught on the worm over chopped worm and casters.
Second spot went to Simon Godfrey two pegs away where he caught one tench to 3lb plus on single pinkie and light rig with the rest of the net made up with roach and rudd taken on the pole with pinkie over groundbait for a total weight of 11lb 4oz.
Frank Bevilacqua came in third. He fished on the pole with pinkie over groundbait with an all small fish catch of 8lb 1oz.
n The Bourne League took place at the weekend and again the Wisbech-based Sensas Mark One lads did well with the Black team taking second place, just losing out to Maver Bait Tech, and the White team coming third.
So after two rounds, the Whites are in second place on six points and the Blacks third on seven.
The match took place on the River Glen which saw Alistair Ogilvie a clear winner putting 12lb 8oz to the scales, a net of perch and roach.
Dale Stones came second with 10lb 4oz and Steve Slater was third on 7lb 14oz.
Result: Individual: 1 A. Ogilvie, Maver Bait Tech, 12lb 8oz; 2 D. Stones, Garbolino Peterborough, 10lb 4oz; 3 S. Slater, Maver Bait Tech, 7lb 14oz.
Teams; 1 Maver Bait Tech, 17pts; 2 Sensas Mark One Black, 19pts; jt 3 Sensas Mark One White and Lincs County, both 20.
League: 1 Maver Bait Tech, 2pts; 2 Sensas Mark One White, 6pts; jt 3 Garbolino Peterborough and Sensas Mark One Black, both 7pts.
n Deeping St James AC held the fourth round of their Individual League Series at Stretton Lakes on Sunday.
Stuart Redman finished out in front with a very respectable 31lb12oz.
Redman fished the pole between the islands feeding micro pellet with red maggot on the hook.
Second was Mark Horsley with a mainly carp net for 17lb 4oz and he also fished the pole with red maggot.
Hugh Mannell was third with 16lb 12oz of carp caught on sweetcorn up against the island.
This week’s match should be The Several Fishery Trophy on the Deeping roadside stretch of the River Welland, but could be subject to change so you would be advised to contact either Carl Fisher 07734 583567 or Andy Wilson 07787 352762 to confirm later in the week.
n A small match was arranged for Sunday on Factory Bank by Stanjays. Weights were low and with a few more frosts to come some of it could be difficult by the time the HAJAC League gets on it at the weekend.
Top rod was Roy Whincup, who drew peg five and took a net of small roach on bread punch for 6lb 9oz. Runner-up with 3lb 5oz was Tony Hayden followed by Trevor Oakman on 2lb 15oz.
n Local rod Jon Young continued his good run of form in the Tydd Gote matches by taking the top spot in the midweek match fished on the North Level Drain at Clough.
Young took a net of roach on hempseed for 5lb 4oz. Mick Asker came second on 4lb 9½oz followed by Andy Greenwood on 4lb 9oz.
Ray Groom topped the Sunday match on the same venue with 6lb 10oz of small roach taken on the whip with pinkie, then came Andy Greenwood and Phil Parnell, both weighing in a level 6lb.
n The weekend’s Ramsey AS club match was fished on the Old Nene at Ramsey St Mary’s and with the water in cracking form some really big weights were expected.
It was not to be though, although Paul Kilby pulled of something of a shock result putting a fine 9lb 2oz net of small fish to the scales from his peg well away from the better pegs of the match.
Runner-up from peg one was his brother Andrew, who put 8lb 10oz to the scales followed by Ivan Steels with 6lb 11oz.
n Despite an overnight frost, small carp fed well on Jay Lake for the regular Friday Open matches at Rookery Fishery, Pidley.
First place went to Roy Whincup on peg 40. He caught small carp on pellet and maggot for 34lb 2oz.
March rod Gary Burton finished second on 25lb 4oz followed by Chris Saunders with 21lb 3½oz.
n Ricky Young is the man to beat right now at Townsend Lakes after taking the honours two days running over last weekend.
On Saturday, the open match was fished on the Woodpecker Pool which saw the Browning Hotrods angler put 37lb 10oz to the scales from peg five.
Young fished the long pole with pellet taking carp, with roach and bream falling to red maggot.
Colin Begbie came second on 20lb 10oz followed by Harry Morgan with a level 16lb.
Sunday’s match was fished on the Kingfisher Pool and saw Young bag 19lb 13oz to take the honours.
Harry Young came second with 7lb 9oz followed by Steve Hillman and Derrick Upson, both on 5lb 13oz.
The fishery run open matches on most Saturdays and Sundays. Give Townsend owner Colin Begbie a call on 01945774008 if you fancy a go.
n Saturday’s open match on the Snake Pool at Headfen saw fishery boss Marcus Bailey top the field with a very respectable 47lb 13oz net of small carp taken on the pole with red maggot. Runner-up was Matt Ayers with 24lb 8oz, followed by Dave Rodwell with a level 14lb.
Sunday’s match at the fishery saw a good turnout on the Trev’s Pool with anglers looking to qualify for the big £2,450 final later in the year.
First place went to March rod Ian Warby. He drew peg 37 and fished a straight lead approach over to the island taking carp to 7lb for a match-winning 83lb 4oz. Steve Cowley came second with 77lb 8oz followed by John Millard on 32lb 10oz.
This coming weekend it’s the same arrangement. Saturdays match is on the Snake Lake, Sunday’s event will be fished on Trev’s.
