Have your say

Local side JVAC progressed to the regional finals of the Angling Times Supercup at the weekend but had to fight much harder than expected.

They were up against Townsend Lakes and Cromwell AC from Huntingdon in the local heat on the Cedar Pool at Decoy Lakes on Sunday and with home advantage and a very experienced line-up they were expected to fly home.

Abbi Kendall won the Ramsey AS match.

But my goodness did they have a shock. An overnight frost coupled with yet another day of bitterly cold winds saw some very good weights recorded but also some poor nets put to the scales.

It was touch and go right up until the final section was weighed in.

As the results got read out JVAC (11pts) had made it through by just one point over Cromwell, then it was Townsend Lakes a further point behind.

It was just as close on the individual front with all the leading weights coming from the car park end.

Top rod for JVAC and match winner was Andy Kelk. He started on a straight lead approach before switching to the pole with pellet then finally bagging up close in with red maggot to record 115lb 4oz.

Pushing him all the way until the final whistle was Ricky Ashwell. He had a good start to the day, then suffered mid-match before a cracking late run saw him finish with 113lb 6oz.

On the opposite bank but still at the same end of the lake was third-placed Tony Watling. He was yet another to catch well late in the match finishing with 102lb 2oz.

RAMSEY AS

Once again England Ladies international star Abbi Kendall showed her class on the local match fishing scene, topping a strong field in the lates Ramsey AS match fished on the Beastie Lake on the Decoy complex.

Abbi drew peg nine next to the small footbridge and caught on the long pole with 6ml soft pellet to put a fine 139lb to the scales.

At the other end of the lake was her partner Rob Wright on peg 30. He fished several methods including feeder and long pole and finished the day taking three double-figure fish from the margin to weigh in 135lb.

Third place went to John Price with 97lb, followed by Josh Pace on 81lb 8oz.

This Sunday’s match is on the Damson Pool at Decoy Lakes and organiser Keith Rayment tells me there are still a few tickets left.

TUESDAY CLUB

A new club called the Tuesday Club fished on the High Bank at Ferry Meadows in their latest match.

Winner Mike Smith put 19lb 5oz to the scales, all taken on the pole at 11 metres with maggot over groundbait.

Runner-up was Mike Mohan, who had 16lb 14 oz caught on maggot over groundbait, with Mel Saggers third on 13lb 3oz.
