Over the past few days we have seen the River Nene in all but full flood conditions and you’d think it virtually impossible to catch a fish with the river carrying so much water and colour.
But I have just heard that Stamford specimen angler Nigel Bryans has taken one of the most remarkable catches I have ever heard of from the river.
In a two-hour Monday afternoon/evening session at Elton he managed to catch three enormous barbel.
The first fish he caught weighed in at 16lb yet amazingly he caught two further fish both going to the scales at 16lb 8oz.
At the time of writing I have no details with regard to baits and tactics but with the river carrying so much water I think it is reasonable to assume that big smelly baits were the order of the day along with a fairly hefty weight to hold bottom.
I can hardly believe that one angler can bag a brace of 16lb plus but to take three in such a short session is without doubt one of the most outstanding angling achievements in any one session recorded on the River Nene.
