Angling: Drew wins but strong winds make life difficult on the Old Nene

THE Allsorts lads fished the March Bypass section of the Old Nene which is usually a very reliable venue at this time of year, but with it being low and clear like most venues and on Sunday being hit by strong winds sport was far from its best.

In first place from the peg on the marina mouth was Steve Drew weighing 3lb 15oz - all small fish caught at six and 10 metres on pinkie over groundbait.

Runner-up Lee Covell caught well at the start but had a bad last two hours and put 2lb 13oz on the scales while John Parnell caught on the bread punch for 2lb 11oz and third place.

The match was run as the club’s winter league pairs match and the winners were Dave Arbon and Steve Stones with a total weight of 4lb 12oz. Runners-up were Steve Drew and Dave Covell with 4lb 4oz.

There was a respectable turnout for the Whittlesey AA Saturday match fished on the top end of Whittlesey Dyke. On the end peg again was small fish expert John Taylor, who is a master of small fish fishing on this venue and has become almost impossible to beat right now.

Using the pole with pinkie over ground bait the Sensas Mark One rod put a winning total of 8lb 2oz to the scales. Second place went to Frank Bevilacqua who drew the opposite end of the length and again fishing the pole and pinkie approach over groundbait finished on 7lb 9oz. On the next peg was Mark Chesters with 7lb 4oz, enough to take third place.

ONCE again the bottom strip pools on the Decoy Lakes complex came up trumps at the weekend.

Despite a bitterly cold wind blowing down both the Oak and Elm pools there were some good weights.

Top rod on the Elm pool with a massive 92lb 12oz was Roger Gowler, who caught steadily all day on a small maggot feeder. Terry Tribe came second with 50lb.

On the Oak pool Kevin Wilmot was out in front, fishing the pole with pellet for most of the match although a switch to the maggot feeder late on brought him a few bonus fish for 56lb 2oz. Runner-up with 50lb 4oz was Alan Warren.
