Angling preview: Early morning and late evening best times to fish Nene
Despite a very clear and weedy River Nene there have been some surprisingly good pleasure weights taken, particularly for those fishing early mornings and late evenings.
Despite a very clear and weedy River Nene there have been some surprisingly good pleasure weights taken, particularly for those fishing early mornings and late evenings. That has to be the ideal time to fish the river, at least until we do get some colour and flow running through.
Some barbel have been taken from the Orton and Wansford locks and I hear of bigger fish caught from the Elton waters too.
Halibut pellets hair rigged on a reasonably big hook seem to be doing the trick.
You are not going to be catching lots of fish but enough to keep you happy I am sure.
Last year at this time we were catching plenty of skimmers but it would seem roach have made an early appearance and already those fishing hemp and tares have taken good bags.
Hot spots well worth a try are sure to be the Oundle sections, Yarwell and Wansford and both Orton Upstream and Downstream.
Perhaps the best area of all though is Milton below the bridge. These days it rarely gets fished yet recent surveys suggest it is full of fish. Perhaps it is the walk to the pegs that puts people off these days.
There are one or two matches coming up on the River Welland soon.
I know locals have had some success with bream weights to 30lb taken on a feeder so it will be interesting to see results from them.
Pleasure anglers have concentrated their efforts on the bottom end sections at Spalding fishing maggot or worm over caster.
Fen drains continue to fish really well.
There is something for everyone on the North Level Drain, well worth a visit in my opinion. The Twenty Foot at both March and Whittlesey has seen good nets of bream, bonus tench and roach showing and as always the Forty Foot at the top end rarely lets you down.
On the Ramsey ticket is Staffurths Bridge, possibly one of the best stretches to fish right now. It's full of fish with bream, skimmers, roach and even eels if you want to target them.
Onto stillwaters now and once again you will be spoilt for choice with a huge amount of local fisheries to go for.
I was at Decoy Lakes midweek and the fishing is first class – every lake on the complex looks to be in cracking form.
Kingsland is another venue on fire right now and with a genuine chance of double-figure fish and with very few rules and restrictions it has to be up there with the best right now.
There are also good reports coming from Railway Lakes with both the pools producing well.
Fishing off the top with bread or biscuit is well worth a try at Eldernell and for a cracking day's sport try Northey Park.
Weston Lake at Peakirk is very busy right now, a sure sign of fish being caught, and if you want a bit of peace and quiet yet still catch plenty of fish give Lake Ross a try over at Pode Hole – you will not be disappointed.
Best baits at most waters right now will be pellet, paste, sweetcorn and luncheon meat.
The big match of the weekend looks to be the Terry Mansbridge Memorial match on the South Holland Drain. Tickets are 15 and you can get booked in by ringing Alan Palmer on 07785 510643. The match is a week before the big King of the Fens League fixture so there should be a good turnout.
