Angling: Northey Park is just what you need after a hard day's work
If you are looking for a venue that is not just full of carp then I would suggest you give Northey Park Fishery a try.
If you are looking for a venue that is not just full of carp then I would suggest you give Northey Park Fishery a try.Situated just off the North Bank of the River Nene at the Fengate end, it has quietly been gaining more and more regulars.
There are several pools on this site and it is very rare that it is full up. In fact, owner Elliot Symax makes an effort to accommodate every angler that visits his fishery through the week and through the busy weekend period.
Extensive work has been taking place recently to accommodate even more anglers so by the summer months you will have lots of pools to choose from big and small.
The many small pools give the impression of peace and quiet, just what you need after a week at work.
Sport is always consistent on Blacketts, Swallow and Holly Howe with mixed bags well into double figures on the cards from just about every peg.
Big fish fans are well catered for here with Rio Pool favoured by many. There are lots of double-figure carp in this one and with a good sprinkling of catfish much more robust tackle will be required.
If you are fishing this one then please ensure you have an unhooking mat with you, a carp rod, 10lb-plus breaking strain line and of course barbless hooks.
For the specialist angler there is a real treat in store as Elliott has opened up the Whiskers Pool to day-ticket anglers this year, although you will need to book in well in advance as swims are limited.
The cost is 7 a day, 10 for 24 hours for three rods. The rest of the lakes are 5 per day. For tickets and more details contact Elliot on 07889 711555.
One of the more established waters in the Whittlesey area is Railway Lakes.
There are two lakes on the complex which gives two distinct types of action.
The big, deep lake has been a real winner for Tony and Paul Hudson who run the fishery. It has also been a real winner with those that love a spot of night fishing as they allow you to "bivvy" up. Not many waters in the area let you fish through the night at all let alone set up camp.
Carp to 30lb-plus were taken last year and there is talk of several even bigger samples. It is a water where boilies are allowed and you will need big baits to tempt these monsters of the deep.
The smaller, shallow pool will be the one for you if you like plenty of bites. It's full of features and fish and all manner of methods work well.
I prefer a pellet and paste approach, but meat, corn and pellet all work just as well.
Watch out for the recently stocked chub. They are already growing on fast and are sure to take maggots with red the best colour.
Day tickets are 5, more for a night session. Contact Tony for full details on 01733 203428.
To get there, head out of Whittlesey on the back road towards Benwick. After crossing the railway line look for a small garden centre on the left-hand side. Turn left next to it, drive down to the bottom of the road, turning right at the fence and carry on to the car park.
