Alan Swann: on Andy Murray; Portsmouth's woes; and the John Terry affair

I QUITE enjoy watching Andy Murray, but I can't stand watching his mother.

I QUITE enjoy watching Andy Murray, but I can't stand watching his mother. Why on earth is every rally followed by a televised shot of the family/coaches/fans of the player who has just won the point?

Judy Murray is a scary-looking woman even before she opens her mouth to scream her support or express her delight.

Anyway until Murray finds someone to find him a better serve, he can forget about winning Grand Slams.

JUSTINE Henin finished runner-up in the ladies singles in Melbourne after a 16-month lay-off. Last year Kim Clijsters won the US Open after a 20-month break.

If that doesn't prove the desperate state of ladies professional tennis nothing will. Equal prize money for men and women is the biggest joke in sport.

I HAD to laugh at Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie's sulky revelation that the club had started transfer negotiations with players behind his back.

Storrie even appeared to suggest his position was untenable. An honourable suggestion as he's been to known to earn in excess of 1 million a year from a club run so badly they have tetered on the brink of extinction for most of this season.

If I was a Portsmouth fan I'd be rather pleased that Storrie has been excluded from transfer deals. Presumably he had some input in the ridiculous 80,000 per week wage deal negotiated by Useless Utaka and others.

THE moral outrage displayed by the media over the John Terry affair has been hilarious.

Surely the only person with a right to be angry is Mrs Terry and even she knew what she was getting into by marrying a serial philanderer.

Terry shouldn't be England captain because his snarling confrontations with officials and his clumsy attempts to cash in on his position of national skipper had already proved he was an unsuitable leader.

Sacking him for matters relating to his private life would be wrong and a dangerous precedent considering 90 per cent of Premier League footballers are untrustworthy oiks.

THE BBC surpassed even their own pathetic standards with their coverage of Terry's indiscretions.

They canvassed Chelsea fans who quite incredibly all backed Terry. I'm taking a punt here, but I reckon if they'd canvassed Manchester City fans they would have all backed Wayne Bridge and condemned Terry.

Still this is the organisation that insists Steve Claridge has an opinion worth hearing, that a girl perched on a desk reading out moronic texts from partisan fans makes for good tele and that obnoxious Robbie Savage is the football pundit of the future, so we shouldn't be surprised.

I hope Leeds United stay in League One.

The football is more enjoyable and it is not a matter of life and death - I am fed up with reading posts from depressed whinging Posh/Liverpool/Man Utd fans who seem to be on the verge of suicide because they have lost or suffered a dodgy refereeing decision.

Speaking as a Leeds fan I do find Alan Swann veers slightly towards the vindictive end of the banter spectrum and that grates a bit. It is probably because he is an ex-Leeds fan (as he has admitted on these pages in the past).

And to the boastful Leeds fans - we have actually won nothing yet this season. If we do get promoted we will probably struggle the same way that Posh have.

For once I totally agree with your comments about Graeme Smith. He was an absolute disgrace not walking in the first innings of the final Test and I find it also very disappointing that certain "ex" England players appeared to condone his actions.

Also had you been captain Kevin Pietersen would be in the Peterborough Town Nomads! Rightly so.

Geoff 'Ticker' Towns

I read that the England cricket captain (or is he the Soth Africa captain?) Andrew Strauss has declined to lead the country on its next tour as the poor dear is tired and jaded.

What a jessie! He should consider switching sports and becoming a Pro Tour rider as he will only have to contend with some 100 cycle races over the year averaging five hours-plus a day in the saddle in all weathers.

Then he will have 265 days to rest.

But, although I have never had much time for tennis, I feel really sorry for Andy Murray.

The BBC put so much pressure on him all week no wonder he crumpled to a Swiss precision machine.

At one stage I really thought the BBC were changing their initials to MBC.

I also wonder if the BBC are actually sponsoring tennis judging by the way they fawn over the game.

I am going to the doctor's tomorrow. There must be something seriously wrong with me because I found myself agreeing with everything Swanny wrote last week.

As a Barnsley fan looking at your prediction for the final Championship table, 2009/10 season, I can only hope you don't rely on your forcasts to earn a living.
