GENERAL SPORT: Peterborough's sport facilities will receive a multi-million pound cash windfall over the next three years to develop the stars of the future.
A motion was passed at a meeting of the full council this week which will eventually see a minimum of £1.2 million spent on upgrading the city’s ailing facilities.

An all-party focus group has now been set-up to target how best to spend the cash a
nd to look at ways of finding sources of extra revenue which could see the overall spend go way over the £2million mark.

Councillor Keith Sharp proposed the motion and will head the group. He said: “Watching the likes of Louis Smith and Matt Skelhon in the Olympics and the Paralympics this summer was an inspiration to a lot of people, in particularly youngsters.

“But many of those inspired by what they saw have limited means by which they can pursue their dreams of one day competing at the highest level.

“I proposed this motion which has now been agreed when it became clear there would be money available to spend on upgrading sports facilities in the city.

“We would like to have a gym good enough so that the next Louis Smith does not have to go to Huntingdon to train.

“There is also a will to improve the facilities we have already and to build on them. Things like the all-weather courts in Orton Longueville and the gym facilities at Arthur Mellows Village College at Glinton can all be developed further and that is what we hope to do.”
