Posh record signing makes his England Under 21 debut
JOE Lewis won his first England Under 21 cap in last night's friendly international against Wales at Wrexham.
The 20 year-old Posh goalkeeper kept a clean sheet as England won the match 2-0 with first-half goals from Tom Huddlestone and Theo Walcott.
Lewis replaced Manchester City's Joe Hart at half-time with England already two goals ahead. He had little to do in a one-sided encounter played in front of England's senior coach Fabio Capello.
Capello addressed the players before the match, a big factor in an excellent team performance, according to Under 21 boss Stuart Pearce.
Pearce said: "I could say a thousand words to the players before the game, but that pales into insignificance compared to Fabio just showing his face. He made the players feel 10 feet tall."
England Under 21s were unbeaten all season, but Lewis has a great opportunity to become the number one keeper as Hart is expected to step up into the senior squad.
England are next in action in September in a European Championships qualification game against Portugal. Pearce's side are almost assured of qualification for the finals in Finland next summer.
England: Hart (sub Lewis), Cranie, Taylor (sub O'Hara), Cattermole, Mancienne, Wheater (sub Dann), Walcott, Huddlestone, Agbonlahor (sub Blackstock), Leadbitter (sub Muamba), Adam Johnson (sub Shawcross).
