POSH are targeting Premier League players to boost their hopes of a second successive promotion.
Manager Darren Ferguson is due to meet with two potential new signings this week. Both would confirm the club's policy of recruiting young, hungry players.

Ferguson is currently seeking just three new signings with a right back the number one priority.

A midfielder and a winger are also being sought, but the manager has abandoned the idea of bolstering the centre of his defence for the start of the League One campaign.

Ferguson could bring the Premier League players to London Road on lengthy loans, but he insists he will not be rushed into completing deals.

Ferguson said: "I'm not in the situation I was last year when I needed to sign several players in a hurry. I am very happy with my current squad, but two or three quality additions would give us a great chance of winning promotion again.

"I may bring one or two players in on loan from Premier League clubs. I know the players I want and I've spoken to a couple of managers, but there is no rush and I certainly won't panic if we don't complete deals straight away.

"The players concerned are young and hungry which fits in with a transfer policy that has served us well.

"A right-back is my priority, but I'm after a winger and a midfielder as well.

"I'm going to start next season with the same centre-backs and Shane Blackett should be fully fit by then as well which will be a big boost.

"Ideally I'd like a squad of about 24 so I will have to lose some players. There are players under contract here who won't be getting any football and that can't be good for them."

Ferguson admitted he is now willing to take players from Manchester United on loan, but his current targets are not from Old Trafford. The Posh boss did not want to be seen taking advantage of his family name as he established himself as a manager.

Posh have picked up most of their star players from non-league football recently, but they did sign Charlie Lee from Premier League Spurs last summer. Lee went on to win a major player-of-the-season award.

Posh are willing to let goalkeepers Mark Tyler and Shwan Jalal, winger Josh Low, striker Danny Crow and full-backs Adam Smith and Danny Blanchett leave.

Posh are set to confirm the visit of Liverpool to London Road for a pre-season friendly on Saturday, July 19.

Posh have already confirmed friendlies with Premier League champions Manchester United (Monday, August 4) and West Ham (Tuesday, July 29).

Not sure I agree with Fergusons's policy here as I've never been a fan of season long loan players. Its alright if you are Hereford who it obviously served well but we are meant to be a club going places and this does not smack of that. It says we aren't going to spend money and if we are to mount another promotion campaign thats what we need to do again. I also believe he has got it wrong with the centre of defence, Westwood, Morgan and Blackett will need some competition with the latter not being good enough. The strikers they are due to face next season will be nothing like what they faced in League 2.
