CAMBRIDGE United manager Jimmy Quinn believes his club will lag far behind local rivals Posh in the Football League ladder for the foreseeable future.
Posh will host Cambridge in the first pre-season game of the summer on Wednesday July 16, but Quinn, who could lead 'The U's' back into the Football League on Sunday, admits a competitive clash in the league might not happen for a while.
Quinn, a
Posh hero of the past, will manage Cambridge in their Conference play-off final against Exeter at Wembley at the weekend.
Quinn said: "Even if we do make it to League Two I cannot see us playing Peterborough United for a long time except in friendlies as the gulf between the clubs has grown in recent years.
"Posh have an ambitious chairman who has provided the funds for Darren Ferguson to build a team which I think will have no problem competing at the top end of League One next season.
"I'm pleased for them, but I don't we can catch up with them because of the quality of player and the financial backing they have."
Posh also arranged pre-season friendlies against Premier League sides Liverpool, West Ham and Manchester United at London Road. They will also play Rushden away in the Maunsell Cup Final, visit Corby to celebrate 'The Steelmen's' 60th anniversary and travel to Conference side Stevenage.
The League One season kicks off on Saturday, August 9 with the fixtures due for publication on Monday, June 16.
Posh striker Aaron Mclean has been confirmed as the winner of the Golden Boot for League Two players, a prize awarded to the top scorer in all competitions from that division.
Mclean's 33 goals ensured he would soon be collecting a 'specially designed golden trophy'. Goalkeeper Joe Lewis was fifth in the Golden Gloves competition based on clean sheets.
Lewis kept 16 clean sheets for Morecambe and Posh, seven fewer than winner Willy Gueret of MK Dons. Lewis is expected to win his first England Under 21 cap in a friendly international against Wales at Wrexham this evening.
