PHANTOMS will do 'everything in their power' in a bid to keep miracle man Phil David at the club next season.
General manager Phil Wing has confirmed the club's desire to lure David back for a second term in the Bretton hot-seat after watching the Canadian lead Phantoms to their most successful season for four years.

Having masterminded the stunning KO Cup win in Milton Keynes last week after taking the club all the way up to fourth in the English Premier League table, David is seen as a key factor to Phantoms' hopes of continued success.

However, Wing today confirmed the Canadian's future is still unclear and revealed negotiations would soon be under way in a bid to keep the former Montreal Canadiens junior coach on this side of the Atlantic.

"When we first announced Phil would be taking over, there were a few raised eyebrows in the game," said Wing

"Some said that because he had only managed juniors that he would struggle in senior hockey and that we were taking a bit of a gamble but if we were it has paid off in spectacular style.

"What those critics failed to realise was that in Canada ice hockey is practically a religion and from youth level upwards the coaches all have to be right on the ball and we knew from the start that Phil could improve our team which is what he has done."

Phantoms were lying third bottom in the league and out of the EPL Cup when David arrived back in October but having landed the KO Cup and turned the Bretton boys into serious play-off contenders, Wing is anxious to get round a table with David as soon as possible.

He said: "Phil has a few other commitments back home in Canada which I know may be a factor but there is a very strong desire to keep him at the club if we can and he knows that."

And according to the man himself the feeling's mutual.

But rather than commit himself now, David plans to wait until the end of the season to discuss his future.

He said: "I have been living my dream this season and the whole experience for me here in Peterborough has been amazing.

"Winning the cup last week was just incredible and working with these players is a real pleasure. But for now I cannot commit to anything as there is still a vital part of the season still to go.

"We are right in the middle of our play-off campaign with some massive games ahead so I am just concentrating on that at the moment.

"I also have a lot of off-ice responsibilities back in Canada, but I would love to come back if we can work something out with the club. But for now we will have to wait and see what happens."
