PHANTOMS 6 SLOUGH JETS 1 (English Premier League).
THE high-flying Slough Jets were shot from the sky by the fabulous Phantoms last night on another super six-goal Sunday.
For the second sabbath in a row the crowd at Bretton HQ revelled as their guests were given a good beating by Colin Patterson's side as they completed a four-point weekend with another divine display.
But the one big difference between this near-perfect performance and the humbling of the already humble Swindon Wildcats seven days ago, was that last night Phantoms quite simply destroyed one of the best teams in the EPL.
The Jets had roared into Boro airspace as league leaders having beaten the Bracknell Bees 4-1 the night before, but after 60 minutes of high intensity hockey from their inhospitable hosts, they just about limped back home to Berkshire on one spluttering engine.
Phantoms are now the only unbeaten team in the league after winning three and drawing one of their opening four games this season and in the kind of form which could well see them topping the league sometime soon.
Next weekend's trip to the Hangar followed by the visit to Bretton of reigning champions Guildford Flames will go a long way to deciding if and when that is likely to happen.
But for now this result, secured by a surfeit of superior strikes served up by Maris Ziedins, Craig Peacock, Nathan Rempel and Callum Fowler, is worth savouring for its sake as far as assistant coach Tim Peacock is concerned.
"We were disappointed to miss out on the two points at their place so we were determined to make up for that," he said.
"The team went out there with a great intensity from the first second to the last and they did an excellent job.
"Everyone worked really hard for each other and we played some excellent hockey and got some really well-worked goals.
"It was also very pleasing for us to get a few on the powerplay as last season the team was not making that extra guy count. Since Colin has taken over there is now a lot more movement and we are creating a lot more opportunties as a result.
"Slough are a very good side who were unbeaten before they came here and we are all absolutely delighted with the way we have started. The guys have come together really well and confidence is high at the moment."
