New Peterborough United boss Jim Gannon applauded his players for delivering him a dream London Road debut.
An early goal from transfer-listed striker Aaron Mclean secured a 1-0 Championship win over QPR in Gannon's first match since replacing Mark Cooper as manager.

It was a first win and a first clean sheet for Posh since December, but Gannon instead on handing the credit over to the players.

The new manager introduced a new formation and gave Mclean his first 90-minute run-out since Boxing Day. Three of the four loan players signed by Cooper were left on the substitutes' bench.

Gannon said: "I have a couple of ways I want the team to play and there has been an excellent response from the players.

"I want stability at the back without losing our power up front and for most of the match that's exactly what I got.

"Okay our combinations in possession were not great in the second half, but this won't be an overnight thing and I took many positives from the performance.

"The three central defenders were awesome. the athleticism and endeavour of the wing-backs were outstanding and Aaron Mclean's desire and enthusiasm as well as his goal were impressive.

"There is quality in the side. The goal was very pleasing because we wanted to get George Boyd on the ball because he will make things happen.

"We talked before the game of making sure we kept a clean sheet early on because QPR are the worst team statistically in the second half in the whole division.

"So the early goal was a bonus and the win on the whole very satisfying. It's a good start for us and a confidence boost ahead of some difficult matches."

Posh travel to fourth-placed Cardiff tomorrow before heading to play-off chasing Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Posh closed the gap to safety by two points to nine points with their win and Ipswich's draw at home to Middlesbrough.

Charlie Lee suffered a dead leg in Saturday's win, but is expected to be available for the club's first-ever visit to the new Cardiff City stadium.

Jim Gannon is talking common sense. We all know that we have the players to stay up, it is not a question of lack of skill.

I think that he pinpointed three most significant areas. The back three and the front three must do their business, which they did on Saturday. The question is, "Can the wing backs survive game after game of defending and attacking?" I think the two we had out today can do it. Tommy Rowe has worked it already for Gannon and Chris Whelpdale has the wherewithall. In the middle we have Jake Livermore who I think is a class act. When these lads get really used to the system and the other ones can slot in when needed we could do it.

We did the impossible against Cardiff in one half of a game, now we have do it the impossible in rather less than one half of a season. It can be done. Let's start at Cardiff! They have every reason to be scared of us!

Encouraging that we have a manager who seems to know what he's is doing, rather than just being able to talk the talk. Rather than bitch about things he looks to get the best out of his squad. Not just stick rigidly to 4-4-2 and hope for the best.

Its ironic now we have a right back in on loan we're playing Whelpdale as a wingback, but for last 2 or 3 months we've been playing players out of position who patently cannot do a job at RB.
Also when we've had an abundance of centre backs we've never thought of playing 3 at back, now we've sent Pearce back and had injuries and suspensions we change our system.

Hopefully we have a bit more luck with injuries, but I think when you have a manager like Gannon you tend to have less of the niggly injuries that our players have had under Cooper. With a fully fit and focused squad we actually have options in most departments now. We just need a ball winning central midfielder to protect our defence and we should get a bit of pride back.

Gannon has a presence about him and if he can get the Mac attack firing on all cylinders we could just get a decent finish to the season.

Why when Cooper took over talking of shoring up the defence did he do absolutely nothing (other than release Martin and sign Exodus) has almost certainly doomed us to relegation.

Very good performance from the players. They looked nervous in the 2nd half which is quite understandable after what has gone on so far this season but credit where credit is due, Posh deserved their first 3 points for quite a while.
Gannon, in his short time in charge, has introduced tactics, passing football and galvanised a team that now looks interested in winning games again and battling for each other.
We are a long way behind, but nothing is impossible. With Gannon, the players and the best fans in the land, we could turn the season round and stay up.

Almost as important as inspiring the players is inspiring the fans. For whatever reason Gannons got it, great comments above.

I think even if we lose tomorrow & saturday which is a distinct possibility, this is the man.

We got our football back !

It was a huge improvement on Saturday and it was good to hear the London Road end singing for Jim Gannon from the off. He comes across as articulate, intelligent and has obviously inspired the players as they look as though they believe in what they're doing again. Good luck tomorrow, anything from that game will be a bonus.
