PETERBOROUGH Panthers are a club in crisis after takeover talks collapsed, leading to the resignation of a co-promoter and the possible departure of the team's star rider.
Less than two years after roaring to an unforgettable Elite League title triumph, owner Colin Horton admits the club is in a fight to survive.

On the day that Horton dismissed a takeover bid, co-promoter Mick Bratley stepped down and the future of Hans Andersen was left hanging in the balance over unpaid wages.

Horton has admitted Andersen's salary has fallen into arrears and revealed he can no longer afford to keep the Danish ace on his current contract.

He has offered Andersen a reduced deal, but the rider will not even contemplate that until the monies owed have been recovered.

Bratley believes club has gone down the wrong road

---------------------------

Owner Horton told The Evening Telegraph he has injected more money into the club to make sure all other riders are fully paid up-to-date and has pledged not to let Panthers die.

Horton said: "All our riders are paid up to date except Hans. The money has gone into their bank accounts today.

"We don't have the money to pay Hans at the moment and we simply can't keep him on his current deal.

"His wages are in arrears by two months and, while I can't go into details of figures, I can promise they will be honoured in full as soon as possible.

"I will not let the club go to the wall and that's why this decision to offer him a reduced deal has been made. I am not just confident the club will survive – it will, simple as that.

"The club has already lost around £60,000 this season and that is despite me injecting money. There were discussions held about a possible takeover of the club but that has now fallen through.

"Speedway is just like any other business in that things are always for sale at the right price, but the party interested in Peterborough Speedway did not come up with that right price.

"We were very close but the terms could not be reached and the negotiations have now ceased."

Bratley, who also acts as Andersen's manager, has immediately turned his attention to making sure the rider's unpaid wages are recovered.

Speaking on Andersen's behalf, Bratley said: "I have submitted a list of the monies owed to Hans to both Colinand the British Speedway Promoters' Association.

"The Speedway Riders' Association are also aware of Hans' current predicament and we want cast-iron plans put in place to get the money that is owed.

"Hans will not even consider, let alone ride on, a revised contract until that has been achieved."

It will be a sad day if we lose speedway in Peterborough... I've grown up supporting the team and will miss it if it goes.

I'm looking at the positive and hoping that when Colin says "I am not just confident the club will survive – it will, simple as that" he is speaking the truth.

Great - peace and quiet in the Ortons at last :)

Earlier today, the ET asked for feedback after announcing speedway was near dead and not one person responded because nobody cares - so now the ET has hidden the story away !

The truth is that speedway is only "big" in Peterborough because the ET props it up with disproportionate column inches. Its a minority sport that has had its day.

If it were POSH or the ice hockey team or even the rugby team then there would be loads on here kicking up but apart from the one post above, nodody gives a damn about speedway.

Noisy, boring, dated and about as entertaining as pulling teeth - get rid !

That's all a matter of opinion though, isn't it Paul33?

As for "peace and quiet in the Ortons" - does one night every now and again (seeing as we're hardly getting regular weekly speedway at the moment!) really put you out? When did you move to the Ortons? For most people, the speedway was there first.

SpeedwayGirl,

I was a resident in the Ortons well before the showground and speedway were there.

Let's not forget the smell of the place either.

Plus, it isn't exactly a very "green" sport is it ?

If indeed, it can be called a sport ?

It is a matter of opinion speedway girl and if all the Panthers fans were on here voicing support like yourself then I'd take a different line but that is my point - your club is dying and where are your fans ?

It does suggest a lack of support for the sport so why do we bother - just let it go.

QED - not trying to be clever, just voicing an opinion.

Try offering your opinion on the matter or can't you go beyond personal abuse ?

Or maybe our fans are just at work and don't have access to the net, like I do? Just because they're not posting on the local paper's website doesn't mean they don't care! They're probably gathering their thoughts, feeling a bit wounded and worried about the future of their speedway team...

Is a little compassion too much to ask?

RomanyRon - you live in Eye, why does it bother you? I live in the Ortons - I don't smell anything (though admittedly I'm not *that* close), and the noise (when I'm not at a meeting) doesn't bother me.

I can't believe people are enjoying the demise of a Peterborough sports club!
