OVER 700 youngsters flocked to Fortress Fengate on Sunday (12 October) to take part in Peterborough Rugby Club's annual mini-rugby festival.
The club played hosts to 48 teams from eight clubs across neighbouring counties and they provided an excellent display of both mini rugby and sportsmanship.

Boys and girls representing Peterborough, Amptill, Oakham, Milton Keynes, Deepings, Shelford, Spalding and Oundle took part in age groups ranging from under 7 to under 12, and delighted a packed Fengate with some dazzling displays of rugby.

Darren King from Opteama, the main event sponsors, said he was "impressed with the high standard of rugby and the organisation of the tournament", a thought that was echoed by East Midlands Rugby Union president Derek Watkins, who presented trophies to the winners of both the Plate and Shield competitions in each of the six age groups.

The Steve Sharpe Fair Play Trophy, an award given by Peterborough in memory of the club's former coach and presented by Jen Sharpe, went to Oundle Rugby Club, who throughout the festival showed exemplary sportsmanship and fair play.

With some unexpected and much needed autumn sunshine, there was quire a party atmosphere throughout the day.

The RAF brought along a Harrier cockpit for budding pilots to try their hand at, and Northampton Saints first team players Neil Best and John Brake came to support the event and did a roaring trade in autographs and photos with the youngsters.

Andy McGeown, chairman of the Peterborough Mini and Junior Section, was delighted with the way the whole event unfolded.

He said: "We ran a little behind programme but quite honestly that was the only glitch on a brilliant day.

"My congratulations and thanks go to all of the organising committee for helping to put together a terrific day."
