The millionaire chairman splashed out close to a million pounds on the players who won promotion from League Two last season. He funded the club record £400,000 capture of goalkeeper Joe Lewis after financing the arrivals of star men George Boyd, Aaron Mclean and Craig Mackail-Smith.

But MacAnthony and manager Darren Ferguson are committed to a policy of recruiting young, hungry players rather than older, experienced ones used to fatter contracts.

Ferguson is known to be currently seeking two young players from Premier League clubs.

MacAnthony said: "Everybody has this impression of us as a big spending club, but the reality is that we have stuck to a plan I devised just after I took over as chairman which has never changed.

"That is to buy the best young non-league and League Two talent available as well as the best available youngsters released by Premier League teams each year.

"These types of player do not cost silly money and don't ask for silly wages and can only improve incredibly under our brilliant management team.

"They will bond well with the current players and over the coming three to four years will grow together on the field which will only help our results.

"I have nothing against older players, but the last thing our football club needs is a load of 32 or 34 year-olds looking for one last pay day and draining the club's resources while keeping a talented youngster from progressing at our club.

"This transfer policy will never change while I own this football club and it has reaped rewards thus far with plenty more to come.

"There is no need to break the transfer record unless the manager really wanted me to, but he has told me that he is delighted with what he has already and that he only wants three or four new additions.

"Darren wants two players he has been tracking since March for the League One campaign. They are both from Premier League clubs and they will add an extra bit of quality to the squad."

Ferguson is hoping to wrap up a couple of transfers before he heads off on a family holiday next month. He's after a right-back, a midfielder and a winger.

Posh are also trying to off-load six players. Goalkeeper Shwan Jalal and left-back Danny Blanchett have been the subject of interest from Blue Square Premier side Oxford United.
