NASSINGTON CC currently boast the best team in the club's history.
That's the view of their most talented player of the past three decades, classy batsman Jon Potter, a man enjoying his 25th season with the club.

And the facts back his theory up. Nassington sit top of the Cambs First Division ahead of tomorrow's big match at home to second placed Burwell (1.30pm).

Potter said: "The side with Ali Gohar in, which won promotion from Division Two, was a good side but the current team would probably edge it now.

"We have an excellent blend of quality experienced players and good youngsters. The work Mali Bandaranaike has done with the club's kids is really bearing fruit with players like Harry Chappell established in the first team and many others knocking on the door.

"Obviously the impact Haroon Mohammed and Tariq Aziz have had on the side is immense. Spinners are worth their weight in gold at the level we play at and in Haroon we have the best in the league by some distance.

"It means we always have a chance of bowling sides out, but this season we have also been chasing targets really well."

Haroon, who is currently skippering the side as elected captain Adam Smith has heavy work commitments, has been in outstanding form with bat and ball all summer.

Aziz played well enough for Peterborough Town in the Northants Premier Division last season to suggest that he would be a formidable player at Cambs League level.

But the club also have quality teenagers. Wicket-keeper Chris Budd earned full Minor Counties honours with Cambs at the age of 16 earlier this summer.

Tomorrow they could pit their wits against an international cricketer in Zimbabwean Grant Flower.

Potter added: "Grant doesn't always turn out for Burwell, but if he does they obviously become stronger opposition. But we are on such a good roll we are confident we can win any game.

"And if we win tomorrow that will set us up nicely to go on and win the title."

March are the other team involved in the Division One title race and they will expect to maintain their challenge at the expense of Sawston at Burrowmoor Road.

PETERBOROUGH Town could be without in-form opening batsman David Clarke for tomorrow's Northants Premier Division clash at Irthlingborough.

Clarke underwent a minor operation yesterday and was rated doubtful for the weekend action. Leg-spinning all-rounder Daniel Oldham has been placed on stand-by.

Third-placed Town collected the maximum 30 points from their win over Burton Latimer last weekend, but were frustrated to find that top two Finedon and the Northants Academy achieved perfection as well!

Town will expect to beat Irthlingborough, while hoping Finedon and the Academy drop points against Northampton Saints and Rushton respectively.

ALL-ROUNDER Ajaz Akhtar could move into third place in the all-time Cambs wicket-taking list this weekend.

The Peterborough Town legend has 385 Minor Counties wickets to his name and needs three more to move into the top three.

Cambs are tackling Beds at Bedford Modern School for three days starting Sunday. Akhtar will come face-to-face with Town team-mate Cameron Wake.

Prolific March opener Andrew Mills makes his debut in place of Town's Alan Burton.

Former Town all-rounder Lewis Bruce, who now plays in the North-East, is also included.

Cambs are currently third in the Eastern Division table, a place behind Lincs who host Herts at Cleethorpes.

Cambs: Kellett, Bruce, Pateman, Freear, Mills, Williams, Akhtar, Smith, Buckham, Nunn, Summers.
