MARK Cooper has been named as the new manager of Peterborough United.
The Kettering Town chief has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the club and met his new players for the first time this evening.
Cooper took charge of the Poppies for the last time yesterday when they faced Cambridge United in the Blue Squar
e Premier Division and received a standing ovation from Poppies fans after a 2-0 win.
Former Tamworth boss Cooper has now begun the task of steering Posh clear of the bottom of the Championship table on Monday morning.
Posh director of football Barry Fry confirmed Cooper won what had become a two-horse race to succeed Darren Ferguson in the London Road hotseat.
Fry declined to name the other main contender, but confirmed that he and Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony had interviewed a shortlist of six potential candidates before opting to appoint the 40 year-old.
Fry told the Evening Telegraph: "We have done everything by the book.
"Mark will start on Monday just as we have planned. He is a young, hungry manager who I am personally delighted to have on board."
Fry declined to reveal the identities of the other prospective managers interviewed by Posh in the past couple of days.
Other names rumoured to be in the frame were Brentford boss Andy Scott, Oxford manager Chris Wilder and Bohemians chief Patrick Fenlon. Posh were blocked in their bid to approach Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe.
Cooper has enjoyed great success at Kettering since being appointed in the summer of 2007.
He guided the club to the Blue Square North title glory in his first season at the helm and then masterminded a run to the fourth round of the FA Cup last season that was only ended by Fulham.
Kettering are third in the Blue Square Premier Division this season and defeated League One side Hartlepool in the FA Cup last weekend.
Cooper faces a tough start as Posh boss with a trip to Sheffield United next Saturday followed by a home match against Middlesbrough. Posh hae won just two of 16 Championship matches so far.
Ferguson (right), who steered Posh to successive promotions, left the club by mutual consent earlier this week amid accusations that he had been tapped up by another club. Ferguson denied those claims.

Don't miss Alan Swann's interview with Mark Cooper in Monday's ET.

This is a terrible appointment. Absolutely shocking.

I'll give him 6 months.

The more I hear about the guy, the happier I become that he's been appointed. We needed someone that can organise and it sounds like this guy builds from the back.

He should definitely be given a chance to prove his worth.

In Darragh we trust - let's give the guy a chance, I know all true Posh fans will back him.

Initially a bit shocked but having watched the interview on the posh website, and the fact that he has a very experienced ex championship defender as his assistant, I am happier. Time to move on now, get behind the team and support all the way!

Darragh has been the centre of our progress so let's unite and get behind the club! Fergie has left and Cooper is now our man!!
UP THE POSH !!

A lot of people were sceptical about Fergie at the start - and he got us back-to-back promotions. Let's give Cooper a chance!

Good Luck Mark Cooper.. I Like many will give you our backing as I think your not in too bad a position managerial wise. Keep us up and you win, we go done and it was impossible to keep us up in our present position.
I hope you do a great job and keep us up and then take us on from there. Altho don't listen to Darragh, if he thinks that we can be a top 12 side with the players we have I think he may be pulling the wool over your eyes a little, watch some videos of this season and you'll see we definately need at least 3 quality players. Anyway good luck and here's to playing in this league next season......

Like many people, I am perplexed as to why Darragh should take a gamble when we are in the position we are in. Would have thought proven quality as well as desire would be the better option. Still, he will get our support. Though we won’t forgive the fergie sacking if this goes wrong.
It’s up to the squad to respond now. With a manager coming in who has been used to working on shoestring budget, this will finally answer the question. Was Fergie refusing to use the Darragh millions for new blood, or was he instructed to be frugal?
Good luck Mark!, you might need it old chum!
