"THE Lions are roaring big time."
That was the proud boast from Peterborough Lions chairman Andy Moore after watching his side smash Brackley 53-17 at Bretton on Sunday.

"It was our best performance for years. The backs totally and utterly clicked, the sun shone and we had a crowd
of almost 200 watching. It was a fantastic day," said Moore.

South Africans were responsible for six of their eight tries with Freddie Steyn grabbing three and Jaco Steinberg, Jacques Vorster and Leon Van Niekirk one apiece. Completing the try count were Dan Thompson and Damien Moore while Steinberg slotted two conversions and two penalties and dropped a goal from the halfway line.

New second row Michael Thompson from Durham gave an encouraging debut but the man-of-the-match award went to number eight Van Niekirk.

The victory sees the Lions move up to third spot in Midlands East Division Three (South).

SPALDING ran riot against Nottingham Moderns on Saturday to storm to the top of the table.

The Lincolnshire boys scored 15 tries in a whopping 93-3 victory and are now sitting pretty at the summit of Midlands East Division Three (North) - level pegging with Melton Mowbray and Ilkeston but with a far superior points difference.

With five young players – brothers Matt and Ed Hendry, Rob Wade, Ian Knight and Harry Exley – making their home debuts, Spalding were expecting a tough game against traditionally powerful opposition.

But on this occasion Spalding's creative passing and handling proved too much for the visitors.

Scrum-half Harry Sharman was once again top try-scorer with a hat-trick and there were two touchdowns apiece for Ben Williamson, Wade, Matt Hendry and George Brown. Others to cross in the rout were Adam McHugh, Jamie Anthony, Ed Hendry and Exley.
