Jubilee go out at the top

JUBILEE NORTH END 5 NETHERTON 2 (Hereward Cup Final)
NOT even the fabled pen of Hans Christian Andersen could have conjured a more fitting football fairytale as Jubilee North End waved goodbye to the Sunday morning scene in the manner they know best – winning.
While the legendary author might have preferred to concentrate on little mermaids and ugly ducklings, Jubilee have provided a Sunday football story that will go down in history in these parts.
Scott Stainsby's side were determined to end on a high after around 35 years in the local game and that is exactly what they managed in a showpiece high on excitement, entertainment and emotion.
Twice falling behind to Netherton certainly wasn't in the script, but just like any good story this epic came complete with a happy ending.
A hat-trick from local boy wonder Mark Baines turned things around as Jubilee made the most of their second bite at the Hereward Cup cherry to go out in style.
"It is the perfect end," said emotional manager Stainsby. "I couldn't have asked for any more from the players and they have produced the goods again for the club.
"We were so desperate to finish with a win and lift a trophy in our last game and we can certainly say we have gone out on a high.
"We are finishing at the end of a season in which we have done a league and cup double
"It was obviously an emotional occasion because the club means a lot to many people and Netherton gave us one hell of a game."
That last statement is certainly true as Roland Dean's side were more than a match for Jubilee until seeming to run out of steam in the final half-an-hour.
Netherton held the lead at the break after finding the net towards the end of a low-key first period when Adam Scotcher swept in a Mark Kingston cross at the back post.
Jubilee's failure to impose themselves on the game up until that point sparked an inspired interval reshuffle from Stainsby.
The boss decided to switch golden boy Baines to the left wing and the rest, as they say, is history. The ace midfielder strutted his stuff to put Jubilee on top and leave the boss out of pocket.
"I think that must be the first time one of my tactical decisions has actually worked!" added Stainsby. "I felt he could influence the game more from there and thankfully it paid off nicely.
"Although it has cost me because I told him I would give him £50 if he scored a hat-trick. I felt sure the Netherton lad put the cross into his own net but Mark is adamant in went straight in."
Baines lashed in a leveller to launch a crazy spell of five goals in little over 10 minutes but it was Netherton who struck next as Paul Clark restored their advantage.
Baines cancelled that out moments later and then completed the turnaround as his left-wing delivery flew straight into the net despite the best efforts of defender Clark.
And from then on it was a question of how many for Jubilee.
