CONTINUING the Diary's A to Z of Posh.....I
Players

Jim Iley, Mike Imlach, Godfrey Ingram, Niall Inman, Dominic Iorfa, Mario Ippolitto and Craig Ireland are the only players with a surname beginning with I to have played for Posh.

And only IORFA will be remembered with any fondness thanks to his brilliantly entertaining style of play. He was faster than Road Runner, but clumsier than Wily E Coyote.

The Nigerian Nightmare scored incredible goals against Sunderland and Oxford in particular, but was also capable of missing sitters, including about half a dozen one-on-ones in a First Division match at Leicester City.

Famously dubbed a 'waste of pace' by one Posh manager, Iorfa went on to join Falkirk after mistakenly believing it was a Greek island.

Manager

Jim ILEY was player-manager at London Road between 1969-72 before doing the decent thing and stepping aside to make way for Noel 'The Messiah' Cantwell.

Iley's tenure was not a popular one, although few could fault his dedication and commitment to the cause, which often extended to taking every free-kick and throw-in.

Iley is in the London Road history books as the first Posh player to be sent off in a Football League match, at Port Vale in 1969.

Internationals

Craig Morgan is now the most capped Posh player as 11 of his Welsh caps have been won while at London Road.

Morgan is a top player with a top attitude, qualities that set him apart from the previous record holder James Quinn, a Northern Ireland striker who hated physical contact so much he should have taken up basketball, or even netball.

Goalkeeper Tony Millington (Wales), inside forward Ollie Conmy (Republic of Ireland) and Trevor Anderson (Northern Ireland) are other Posh internationals.

Some players with a Caribbean heritage also won caps, although the eligibility criteria appeared to be quite random. Visiting a beach seemed to be enough for St Kitts and Nevis scouts.

Injuries

John Turner, Trevor Quow and Adrian Boothroyd all broke legs while playing for Posh, but current physio Keith Oakes also had to miss a game once after ricking his back while doing the hoovering.

Didn't Vic Crowe break his leg when POSH played against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA cup ? Would be about 1963 I think.
