Continuing the Diary's A to Z of Posh.....

Famous

Derek DOUGAN shocked the football world when signing for Posh in 1963.

The talented Irishman had quit his last club Aston Villa in a fit of pique, but he returned to the game after Posh boss Jack Fairbrother went to the trouble of tracking him down in his German hideaway.

Dougan could head the ball further than most could kick it and stayed at London Road for two seasons which included a goal in the memorable FA Cup win over Arsenal in 1965.

Excellent

Simon DAVIES has turned out to be the star product from the ill-fated Posh Academy.

'Digger' achieved Posh immortality by scoring a sensational winning goal at Northampton before he was eventually sold for a club record £700,000 to Spurs.

Davies has since gone on to skipper his country. It's only Wales, but the place of his birth is not his fault.

Rubbish

Miguel DE SOUZA's transfer negotiations when he was on the verge of joining Posh were recorded for posterity on a documentary portraying a year in the life of Barry Fry.

Fry agreed to goal bonuses and a payment for avoiding relegation. It was one of the cheapest deals in Posh history.

Bad

One of the saddest times in Posh history arrived when DEMOTION from the old Division Three was confirmed by a Football Association committee in 1967.

Posh were found guilty of offering illegal bonuses to players ahead of an FA Cup tie against Sunderland the previous season. As incentives go it was one of the least successful in football history as Posh lost the match 7-1.

Memorable

DARLINGTON are a club close to Posh hearts thanks to a Wembley win in 2000 which secured a play-off final victory. Posh hardly had a kick in the first-half, but clinched promotion thanks to a late Andy Clarke goal.
