Dominic Green up for a Boyd battle

CONFIDENT new signing Dominic Green is relishing a battle with Posh golden boy George Boyd for his place in the first team.
Left-winger Green (19) is expected to be named on the substitutes' bench for tomorrow's League One clash with Hartlepool at London Road (3pm) after moving from Dagenham for a fee believed to be in excess of £150,000.
Posh manager Darren Ferguson will keep faith with the attackers that fired a second blank in three games last weekend, but Green, who has started just four Football League games, intends to make his future selections more difficult.
Green said: "I know all about what a great player George is and I saw it in training yesterday. He has fast feet, but competing with him for a place will just make me a better player.
"I'm not expecting to play tomorrow, but if I'm on the substitutes' bench that will be a bonus for me as I only trained with the rest of the team for the first time on Thursday.
"I am ambitious though and the manager has convinced me that this is the best place for my career to progress. I was on my way to sign for Huddersfield when he got hold of me and invited me in for a chat.
"I've seen what the club has done for Craig Mackail-Smith and Shane Blackett after they moved from Dagenham and hopefully I can achieve the same."
Ferguson confirmed that Green is an out-and-out left-winger, but he also revealed that he might not be in direct competition with Boyd for his place.
Ferguson said: "Dominic's arrival frees George up to play in other positions. The first question Dominic asked when I met him was about George, but I just told him to concentrate on his own game and believe in himself.
"George is a great player, but he's so good he could play as a striker, behind the front two or in central midfield. He has been brilliant on the left wing and I don't see him changing position tomorrow, but it might happen in the future.
"We have a tough game on our hands against Hartlepool, especially as they played very well in knocking West Brom out of the Carling Cup on Tuesday.
"But if we are on our own game and we play with the energy and tempo we showed against Leyton Orient in our previous home match we will be okay.
"We have had a disappointing start, but we could easily be unbeaten. We lost to a sloppy goal at Southend and to a shocking error by one of our own players at Scunthorpe."
Posh have cancelled the contract of full-back Adam Smith by mutual consent. He is expected to re-join King's Lynn.
England Under 17s host Israel at London Road this evening (7pm).
