District ladies start national fours defence

THE English Women's National Championships get under way at Leamington this weekend, with the Peterborough & District rink of Sarah Newson, Julie Masters, Val Newson and Catherine Popple bidding to retain the fours championship.
The Newsons and Popple have won this title twice since 2005 and a record three times overall, and they go into this weekend’s opening round, with Julie Masters, as the newly-crowned British champions.

Masters and Wendy Lutkin (Whittlesey Manor) co
mpete in the two-wood singles, which begin on Tuesday, Lutkin then goes for the Champion of Champions singles, starting on Thursday, and at the same time Pat Reynolds and Emma Thurston (Whittlesey Manor) bid for glory in the Mother & Daughter pairs.

The Hunts youngsters are in action next Friday in the opening round of the Amy Rose Under 31 inter-county double rink championship against Somerset.

The line-up is: Emma Jepson (St Ives), Katie Taggart (Peterborough), Kerry Stanley (Whittlesey Manor), Michelle Barlow (St Ives).

Katie Webb (Papworth), Karen Bessey (Hemingford), Hannah Overton (Whittlesey Manor), Sarah Newson (Peterborough).

The triples, pairs and singles championships will be decided the following week before the national roadshow heads south to Worthing for the men’s championships.

n HANNAH Overton (Whittlesey Manor) helped England retain the British Isles Under 25 team championship at Penarth, near Cardiff, last weekend.

She figured in two winning rinks out of three in what was her third consecutive appearance for the England junior team.
