FOOTBALL: Deeping lifted the last place of non-league silverware this season when defeating local rivals Blackstones in the Hinchingbrooke Cup final last night.
Rangers completed a hat-trick of successes over Stones when claiming a 3-1 victory after extra-time at Huntingdon Town FC – they had won both meetings during the United Counties League Premier Division season as well.
Stones were ahead at the inte
rval thanks to a long-range screamer from Andy Boome, but Deeping levelled in the second period through Michael Stevenson.
The sides were locked together after 90 minutes but Deeping seized the initiative in the additional half-an-hour.
Substitute Mark Baines climbed off the bench to fire them ahead before prolific frontman Danny Matson added the clincher.
Deeping manager Tuncay Korkmaz said: "It has not been a great season by our standards but this success has put some pride back into the club.
"Both sides deserve credit for putting out strong sides and making it a good final – and it was obviously pleasing to come out on top.
"Once we got ourselves level I felt we were the only team who would win. We didn't take a couple of half-chances but got the goals that mattered in extra-time."
The defeat meant outgoing Stones boss Tony Lowther's reign came to a disappointing end.
Lowther had targeted this trophy to cap Stones' best-ever season which featured a Lincs Senior Trophy success and a fourth-place Premier Division finish.
Lowther has been replaced in the Lincoln Road hotseat by Dave Bird for next season.
