Darragh EXCLUSIVE: Bad business to sell Mclean for £2m

POSH chairman Darragh MacAnthony gives his view on the interest shown by Wolves in his top striker Aaron Mclean . . .
"My take on the Aaron Mclean transfer saga is simple.
I bought Aaron 18 months ago as one of my first signings when I arrived and have had a fantastic relationship with him ever since.
Whenever he has needed anything I have gone out of my way to make sure he has been looked after and rewarded for the goals he has scored on the pitch.
The day I signed him I remember our manager at the time was not that fussed about bringing him to the club as was the case with George Boyd when we signed him. But I had watched footage of both these players before telling Barry (Fry) to go out and buy them.
These were the type of players I wanted at our football club, young, hungry and with plenty of flair that would excite Posh supporters.
Hence I did what other league clubs did not, I put the cash up and made the signings happen.
I said to Aaron the day he signed that his style of play would make him popular with the fans and once he had two or three good seasons scoring plenty of goals, there would be no reason why he couldn't play at the highest level.
Now, 70-odd games and over 40 goals later he is on course to do what we talked about.
Let's get real here for a minute. Apart from Ronaldo, Aaron scored more goals last season than any other striker in England and Scotland, and Wolves want to buy him for less then a couple of million pounds?
DO YOU agree with Darragh? Should Mclean stay with Posh? Would a move to a club such as Wolves be right for him? Or should he wait for the Premier League to come calling? Comment below
Yet, the same club valued a player who has scored only 10 goals in 50-odd games (Lafferty at Burnley) at £3.25 million!
I did fly in to meet with Aaron and explained that I did not want him to go as I think he will be leading scorer in England next season and by January there will be Premiership clubs coming in for him and if it suits the club and him, we would not stand in his way of playing at the highest level.
I also explained to him that Wolves were a championship club who we will most likely be playing next year anyway and also they have seven or eight strikers already and I would hate to see him making the wrong move.
He explained that it would be an unbelievable opportunity for him and his family, so I offered him a new deal and asked him to stay with us for next season to help us win League One.
Aaron turned down my offer of signing a new contract which of course disappointed me but he has three years left on his contract and will fly to Spain next week with the rest of the squad.
Barry has been criticised for quoting £5 million for Aaron but hearing that Posh were going to accept £1.75 million for our leading scorer was irritating the life out of me and knowing where it was coming from was even worse.
So I told Barry that the terms of £3 million cash and another £2 million with add-ons was the official price, end of story.
I don't want to unsettle our young squad and selling our leading scorer sends out the wrong message to our fans and to our younger players.
Darren Ferguson and his squad need to now focus on the season coming up, get their heads down for pre-season training and the upcoming promotion battle that lies ahead.
Let's be clear on this, Aaron Mclean will score a lot of goals next season and his partnership with Craig Mackail-Smith is the best in the country and taking a couple of million pounds from a championship club would be the worst bit of business I have ever done as 30-goals-per-season strikers do not grow on trees.
I will not be bullied by other clubs and the games they play through agents or the media into selling my best players when it does not suit the football club."
