PETERBOROUGH City Rowing Club could have two crews in action at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta next week.
Following Saturday's Marlow International Regatta, Adam Neill and James Fox have definitely earned a place in the world famous event on the Thames as part of a composite four while Peterborough's all-conquering Under 15 quad face a qualifying competition on Friday night.
The Under 15 quad's performance at Marlow was particularly impressive as they were racing in the Under 16 event.
Racing over the 2000-metre, seven-lane Olympic course at Dorney Lake, the crew of Jack Hunt pupils Sam Tuck, Tom Chung and Ollie Salonna and King's School's Ed Rippon overcame strong crews from Windsor Boys School and King's School Worcester to progress straight through to the final.
The strongest opposition in the final came from top London club Tideway Scullers and from Tiffin School.
Despite being behind to the London crew at the 1000-metre point, they pulled through to win in a time of 6minutes 52seconds.
The crew, who started the year by finishing runners-up in The Evening Telegraph Sports Awards Team of the Year category, are so far unbeaten. Only two weeks ago they won the Under 15 National Schools title beating their nearest opposition by 18 seconds and smashing the course record for the event by a massive 16 seconds.
This performance was enough to convince coach Ian Palmer that they should enter this year's Henley Royal Regatta. They will contest the Fawley Challenge Cup for Under 19 quad sculls, this despite the youngest member of the crew Tuck still only being 14.
Neill and Fox were joined at Marlow by oarsmen from the Leicester and Nottingham clubs in the Under 18 quad sculls and their second place finish to a crew from the Royal Dutch Rowing Federation saw them pre-selected for the Fawley Challenge Cup and avoid having to take part in Friday's qualifying event.
