Barry Fry spent much of Sunday playing down speculation linking Peterborough United players and their manager with moves away from London Road.
Newspaper reports suggested that winger George Boyd was a £6 million target of Premier League Spurs, striker Craig Mackail-Smith was a £5 million target for Championship rivals Middlesbrough and that manager Darren Ferguson was in line to replace under-fire Hull manager Phil Brown.

But Fry, the director of football at London Road, said: "I have had no contact from Harry Redknapp about Boyd or Gordon Strachan about Mackail-Smith so there is nothing in those reports.

"And several journalists have asked me about Darren going to Hull which is also nonsense as far as I'm concerned.

"I spoke to Darren yesterday and obviously he is down because of the results, but he is very confident that things will turn around."

According to the Sunday Mirror, Ferguson "was called to a summit with his Peterborough United bosses last night as fears astonishngly grew that he would be sacked."

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has stated that Ferguson can sell one of his top players and receive a great percentage of the fee to fund the strengthening of the Posh squad.

Scottish giants Celtic were linked with Mackail-Smith when Strachan was the manager at Parkhead.

I would be very suprised to see Boyd at Posh by the end of the January window. On Saturday he was streets ahead of anybody else on the pitch (wasn't difficult to be fair!!). If we can get £6 million and Fergie manages to strengthen using a high percentage, as much much as I would be sorry to see him go, it may have to be done for us to stay up. I think CMS needs to start making a higher percentage of his chances count, before any club comes in with big money.

So someone feeds a journalist a few titbits, and then someone (obviously not the same person) has to comment to give the bullsh*t a little more importance than it deserves. Had this been left as a paragraph of space filler in the News of the World the majority of us would never have seen it or cared about it. Now we're going to get the usual durge of responses on the posh websites, hoping for Boyd/CMS/Fergie to stay or to go.

Oh well big gob gets his name in the press again just so we all know he's still here.

I'd take £6 million - keep £2m for the club and spend £4m on players and wages as well as a replacement for rooster. Also assume that the nearly £1m we will probably get for St L will go to the same ends

Irrespective of whether this story has any foundation or not, should Boyd be asked to sign elsewhere for £6m the club would have no choice other than to take it. We need to accept that we are always going to be a small lower league club and any talent we find needs to be sold on at a good profit. Posh fans won't want to see Boyd, CMS or McLean go, but at the end of the day the club will carry on without them just like they have without Mick Halsall, Ken Charlery, Terry Bly et al. The important thing will be to make sure that not only do we get as much as possible for any outgoing players (which I think it where Fry comes in...) but also to ensure that the money is used both to replace the player, strengthen the squad for the future, and to ensure the club sits on a better financial footing.
So, Boyd for £6m? As great a player as he is, yes please.

Great player but unless there is a bidding war, we won't get £6 million for him. I'm not convinced he will make an impact in the Premiership if he is sold. I feel he isn't quick enough physically or mentally for that level. So he'd make a good Hull City player.

Replacing him will be very tough and essential if we intend to stay up but if the club values the money more than the player, so be it. We will have to accept that we are back to being a selling club, seeing as we are contemplating flogging our best player before we have got anywhere near achieving our stated goals.

How much are Stevenage entitled to from the sale of Boyd?

If we can get £6 million snap there hands off. He's a good player not a great player. He's at a level where he's finding it tough, like all the squad. Whilst he is young and could learn more i doubt he will. he's too slow, can't head a ball, only lasts 70-80mins and if man marked has not got a clue. Good servant to the club and i hope he stays but why has no club come in for him over the past 2 seasons? Goo point Greg, how much will Stevenage get?

I strongly doubt it'd be £6m, more like £3m and even then it'd be cluases depending on appearances etc.

I would also question the point of selling him if we are trying to stay up - surely he's worth more to us playing well for the rest of the season and if we go down or we want to sell at the end of it then so be it. The price won't be much different in Jan or July I wouldn't have thought.

The cash coming in is irrelevant if they are not willing to speculate with it (and i personally don't think they should). It keeps getting said that Burnley sold a player for £4m and then invested and got promoted - however, they invested in quality Championship level players like Chris Eagles. Would Posh be willing to pay the wages of a player occasionally playing for Man Utd - I dont think so. (Chris Eagles drives a Lambourghini so guessing he's on a bit more than £1k a week) So if we do get £6m who will they buy - a load more league 1 level players?

At the moment it just feels like we are realising that we are only equiped for League 1 - it might be that we need to consolidate and sort the squad slowly to really challenge in the Championship.

Just thought, I was watching an under 16 game at the weekend and there was a cracking forward. He's young, can head a ball, low wages, lasted 90mins no problem, lightning quick and I'm sure his fee would be nothing so fits the criteria we have exactly. He plays local football as most of the good players around Peterborough do and does'nt want to play for Posh as the set up is rubbish as its who you know not how good you are. Only joking so don't start calling......

I wish there was more talk of us interested in buying championship players rather than talk of selling the VERY FEW players we have good enough at this level.
