TOMORROW'S a big day for Peterborough Rugby Club players hoping to make the first team squad for the English Clubs Championship opener in a fortnight's time.
That first Championship fixture in Midlands Division One is an away game at Newport on Saturday September 13 and Borough's selectors will have a good idea of who'll be involved after tomorrow's two final trial games.

Those trial matches are both against Old Albanians at Second Drove, Fengate, with the firsts kicking off against Albanians firsts at 2.30pm and the Development XV playing Albanians seconds (3pm kick-off).

"And we'll be keeping a keen eye on both matches," said Borough manager of rugby Paul Freeman. "Our Development XV is essentially a third team stacked with youngsters with first team potential and also including a few old heads with a wealth of first team experience to help bring them on.

"So everyone in the Development XV comes into the reckoning as well for first team selection. And with there being no first team fixture next weekend, tomorrow's games represent the last chance for most to force a way into the senior side.

"We have got lots of competition for places in many areas. We have made some very promising additions to the senior squad and it's great to see some of our homegrown talent coming through and challenging the more established first team players for their places – youngsters like Johnny Beall, Andrew Dewdney and Sam Crooks. It's good to see.

"We are very keen to develop our own minis, juniors and colts into first team players, hence the introduction of a Development XV."

The newcomers looking to make their way into the first team squad are Whittlesey boy Duncan Low, a classy fly-half who was with Level 5 club Shelford last season, Sean Bennett, a centre from National League club Weston-Super-Mare, Alun Meadows, a flanker from South Leicester, and Chris Fletcher, another centre from Nottingham University.

"We played a trial game at National League Three side Loughborough University last weekend and to only lose by three tries to two was a commendable effort," added Freeman.

"From that game we formed opinions of certain players and the first team squad is taking shape nicely. It'slooking very interesting. It's certainly as strong as last season."

Tomorrow's first team squad is: Beall, Dewdney, Marcisauskas, Guseinov, Ciuchlejus, Low, Humphrey, Harrison, Cook, Cade, Phillips, Andrijauskas, Burpitt, Brudnell, Meadows, Fletcher, Bennett, Kells, Hodges, Louw, Allen, S. Crooks.

First team players from last season that are unavailable tomorrow are James Clarke, Ben Chan, Ben Crooks, Jason Coulter and Adam Lucia.

Spectators are welcome to attend tomorrow's games. Admission is free.
