LIVID boss Trevor Swales reckons he has never seen a worse Panthers home performance than the club's KO Cup horror show last night.
Swales was seething after watching this side crash 51-39 to Lakeside Hammers in the first leg of a quarter-final showdown. It was a shocking result that leaves Panthers with virtually no hope of claiming silverware this year.
They now need a mirac
le to avoid a cup exit in the second leg tonight and are marooned in the lower reaches of the Elite League standings, but Swales defiantly insisted their season is not over.
"This has been a season with many disappointments but this goes in at the top of the scale," stormed Swales.
"We were totally destroyed on our own track and that just can't happen. I don't think I have ever seen a worse home display from a Peterborough team.
"And that is not just an over-reaction in the heat of the moment. I have had plenty of time to take stock and calm down.
"Granted we might have played into Lakeside's hands by not getting enough water down onto the track but the surface is the same for everyone and they simply out-rode us.
"They were quicker from the gates and were passing our riders all night which should not be happening around the Showground.
"We are barely halfway through the season and it is way too premature to say it is over for us. But what is clear is the fact we have to start turning these results around fast."
And Swales pleaded for the fans to stand by their team.
"I hope the supporters don't give up on us because we are going to get better," added Swales. "We hate losing at home and don't intend letting it happening again this season."
Panthers now face the prospect of tackling the second leg at Purfleet tonight (8pm) without their three top riders – Hans Andersen, Kenneth Bjerre and Danny King.
Panthers have booked Poole man Bjarne Pedersen to replace Andersen, but have been dealt a blow with their other guest.
First choice Cameron Woodward has too high an average to deputise for King so Swindon's James Wright has been drafted in. It's rider replacement for Bjerre.
n PANTHERS wore black armbands last night as a mark of respect to avid fan and sponsor Barry McIntosh who died earlier this week. A minute's silence was held in his memory before racing.
