PANTHERS made it fourth time lucky last night.
The city side finally managed to claim a home success over play-off bound Lakeside Hammers this season after previously being held to two draws and succumbing to a heavy defeat.

A resounding 56-37 triumph proved Panthers' desire to escape from relegation bother, underlined their strength in depth and highlighted the class of young British talent Tai Woffinden.

The youngster stepped in as a guest for captain Ryan Sullivan – laid low by an ear and throat infection – and roared to 10 points. Reserve Claus Vissing topped the scorechart with a smashing paid 14 haul.

Team boss Trevor Swales said: "Everyone knows the amount of problems that Lakeside have given us around the Showground this season so it was great to get one over them and to do it in such style was very pleasing indeed.

"The lads all rode magnificently and young Tai was absolutely outstanding. To come into an Elite League meeting, ride at number one and win three races is a cracking achievement."

Panthers rely on another top British guest to cover Sullivan's absence (due to Polish play-off action) when making the return journey to Lakeside tonight.

Coventry man Chris Harris is drafted in at number one while the Hammers expect to have reserve Lubos Tomicek available following a bout of concussion. They use Eastbourne man Edward Kennett as a guest.

Reading this report and studying the league table begs two questions:

How has it come about that a Coventry rider is guesting at Lakeside for Panthers this evening in Sullivan's absence. A casual glance at the league table suggests Coventry are the only outfit who can further embroil us in the relegation lottery as they have a fixture in hand and are but a single point behind Panthers. Surely there is major conflict of interest?

Concerning the exciting Tai Woffinden. He is, I understand, retained by Wolves who may well not remain in the Elite league next term. Being the bright young thing he is, surely he has an escape clause that could be exploited by an enterprising promoter?
