WIMBLINGTON hitman Martin Porter came up with a magnificent response to being benched.
Porter had found himself among the substitutes in recent weeks due to a loss of form, but he marked his recall in some style on Saturday by inspiring his side to a first Peugeot Premier Division victory with a perfect hat-trick.

Porter's treble was the highlight of a 4-3 triumph over Alconbury with Gary Gibbs also delivering a triple-whammy for the losers.

Delighted Wimblington boss Chris Bartlett said: "Martin was a defender who we converted into a striker last season, but he had been on the bench for a couple of weeks after losing his form.

"I put him back in from the start on Saturday and he responded brilliantly with a great hat-trick in a massive result for us.

"We have had a hard time of things so far as all six of our games have been against teams in the top six, but hopefully this win can give us a springboard."

Classy central defender Jamie Whytock hit the other Wimblington goal while Alconbury co-boss Barry Gregory was left facing the familiar task of explaining his side's bad defending.

Gregory said: "It is the same old story and I'm starting to sound like a broken record player.

"Our attacking is brilliant at times but our defending leaves a lot to be desired. We know what the problem is and have got to get it fixed."

LEVERINGTON boss Wayne Garner is one baffled man.

Garner saw his side slump to a shocking 6-1 defeat for the second time in three weeks – results that have sandwiched a smashing away win at Whittlesey.

Rutland Rangers were the latest to tear Leverington apart with hot-shot Robbie Pearce grabbing a hat-trick, right-back Sam Munton going forward in style to bag a brace and Michael Nelson also finding the net.

Garner said: "Desire, enthusiasm ... in fact just about everything was missing.

"I can't put my finger on what is wrong but we have got to stick together, get our heads up and start improving."

Not even the presence of Soham man Darren Jimson, who scored as a second-half substitute, could inspire Leverington.

Rutland boss Andy Saddington is a far happier man after leading his side into the upper reaches of the table.

He said: "We are just enjoying playing our football in the Premier Division. We have started well, but we are not about to get carried away."

PETERBOROUGH Sports predictably went down to a second heavy defeat on Saturday.

Title-chasers Ramsey won 7-0 at PSL and created a big impression on Sports joint manager Darren Sweary.

He said: "Ramsey are at the level we have to aspire to. They are likely to finish in the top three and play some excellent football.

"Everyone at Peterborough Sports is very positive. We have players joining all the time and we are determined to get into a position where we can win football matches."

Jason Morris grabbed four goals with Steve Robson, Adam Taylor and Daniel Edwards also finding the net – the latter marking his 21st birthday in style.
