Raz Jabbin: Was Big Brother right to throw out Alex?
My life as a British Muslim - 25/06/08

After watching Alex in Big Brother, like many others I found my blood boiling. I felt frustrated almost to the point of tears, but I don't believe Alex should have left the BB house.
As far as I'm concerned the likes of Alexandra de Gale, stands for everything that is real in today's society. She is obviously very bitter, very angry and has made some bad choices in her life but what frightens me even more than the talk of her "gangsta friends" is that she takes no responsibility for her disgusting behaviour and avoids it by having an answer for everything which is so 21st century.
Alex, is a young mum, who fell pregnant at around the age of 16 and I can't believe for one second that she portrays herself much differently in front of her child, unless she has a split personality disorder; but you just have to take a walk into Peterborough and you'll find a few Alexs of our own hurling abuse at their toddlers.
Secondly, for me, this year's Big Brother has highlighted how everyone is jumping on the "I'm a Muslim" bandwagon without having a clue about the fundaments of being a Muslim.
I am not referring to the show of flesh or lack of hijab. I'm talking about the lack of respect and thinking you have the right to dictate how another Muslim should be practising their religion.
I could not believe Alex was representing anything to do with my faith but it was a very real insight into how the religion is being used today. To me it seems as if converting to Islam is the new gangster thing to do, and if this is the new mainstream Muslims I'd rather stay old school.
For many people watching Alex on television was a bit like watching Neil Armstrong land on the moon, you finally realise that actually, such things do exist out there and they're not just in the movies, but Alex's problem was she was almost too real and our problem is we can't tolerate it.
As a society we often want characters such as Alex to go back under the dark rock they crawled out from, however the dark rocks are ending up being our alleyways or front doors.
And in the real world there is no eviction, we have to live with these people and they don't just disappear after an interview with Davina or a few photo shoots.
So I think Big Brother actually did get it right in creating another reality TV show but again it is something we couldn't bear to look at.
