"Raz, I know this might sound disappointing, but I feel like I'm losing my faith and I think it has to do with everything I have gone through. I mean if there's a God, how come things are so unfair."
I don't know about being disappointed, but I was definitely upset to hear a close friend – who admittedly had been through a lot – say this last week. But then it reminded me of my own thoughts around God.

When I was young, thinking that God might not exist, even if it was for a split second, was one of the scariest things in the world. The other thing which used to get my head spinning was where did God come from? Who created him?

As I got older and stronger in my faith, I allowed myself to explore the possibility that God may only exist because I needed him to.

It might all sound a bit philosophical but I think it's important to admit that through our time of despair, many of us have questioned our faith, but this is OK because when we return to it again, it can only strengthen the relationship we have with God. Well that's been my experience anyway.

I returned to God because, even though things got bad, I felt supported by him. I was able to hear him and receive the assurance that he is there for me. That he does exist.

However, when I finished talking to my friend, I started wondering about that age old question: "What came first, the chicken or the egg?"

To put it into context, does God exist because we have faith in him or do we have faith because God exists and can one really be one without the other?

Take my friend's statement for example. I have heard many people, myself included, talking about faith, religion or even God as something we have to believe in.

But the truth is we have a choice.

Yes, things get difficult and life can seem unfair at times but I would rather put my faith in God and wait patiently for things to become fair than put my faith into a knife, a bomb, or a gang and chase their unrealistic illusion that they have the power to make things fair.

Many people have faith, but nowadays it just comes in many different forms. No matter what form it comes in for you, ultimately it is us who have the responsibility to choose.
