Alan Swann
HE has a character that only his mother could love, but Craig Bellamy remains a decent footballer.
The Welsh international striker, booed throughout by Posh fans just for being Craig Bellamy, responded with two high-class finishes as West Ham eased to victory in last night's friendly at London Road.

He proved to be the difference between two good quality-passing sides. Bellamy's goals saw The Hammers 2-0 up at the interval even though Posh had created far more goalscoring opportunities.

In fact Posh keeper Joe Lewis just had to pick the ball out of the back of the net twice in the opening half, while Robert Green was forced to stretch to tip a superb overhead kick by Aaron Mclean wide of the post, leap high to push Craig Morgan's header over the bar, use his feet to thwart Chris Whelpdale's drive and jump to divert George Boyd's audacious chip over the bar.

Posh played some outstanding attacking football, notably on 10 minutes when Mclean, Boyd and Craig Mackail-Smith linked up brilliantly forcing Matthew Upson to throw himself into the way of Mclean's shot.

Posh boss Darren Ferguson sent on arguably his current first-choice side at the start with Shane Blackett's pace at the back preferred to Chris Westwood's experience, but even an Olympic sprinter would have struggled to keep up with Bellamy.

Bellamy was caught offside about a dozen times, but he escaped onto two long balls to score his goals.

As early as the second minute Scott Parker found him beyond the Posh defence and he scooted round Lewis to score and two minutes before the break he supplied a classy lobbed finish after reaching Lucas Neill's long punt forward.

West Ham did Posh proud by sending a powerful side which included £5 million summer signing, Valon Behrami, a Swiss international who proved within a minute that he would fit into the Premier League by delivering an outrageous dive to win a free-kick.

It remained an entertaining end-to-end encounter after the re-start and Whelpdale should really have pulled a goal back straight away, but he sent a free header from a Russell Martin cross wide of a post.

Posh skipper Craig Morgan then produced a fine block to deny Carlton Cole a tap-in after another surging run from Bellamy. Cole's presence for the entire 90 minutes ensured The Hammers were never likely to score a more commanding victory.

The mass substitutions employed by Posh around the hour mark predictably disrupted their flow, although newcomers Paul Coutts and Shaun Batt showed some neat touches as did Alfie Potter.

Boyd struck the foot of a post with a 20-yard volley with his last contribution before becoming the seventh Posh substitution.

Performances rather than results are key at this stage of the year so Posh can reflect on a good night's work, certainly on the pitch at least.

Off it, questions might be asked as to why a crowd of under 5,500 caused a 10-minute delay to kick-off.

We did ''okay'' in patches but I didnt take many positives from the game. Starting with the woeful attendance, especially with a nigh on full strength West Ham squad.

Boyd (MOM?) was outclassed all night long by a superb rightback and continues to prove he will never make a premiership footballer.

Williams gave the ball away continuously

Defence was flat and caught out by ordinary football for BOTH goals.

Midfield couldnt mark space nor players.

BOTH lads up from worked very hard but didnt get the rewards....

I know we are talking about a West Ham side with great experience, but it did show a few areas we need to work on......very happy I went and am looking forward to the season starting...

I had no problem getting in. I got there at 7.43 with no ticket and wandered straight in. An entertaining game I thought.

i thought they sold 5,000 tickets before the match. Seems that talking to a fair few people in pub before and in/outside the ground that everyone i spoke to was paying on the gate... WHAT A LOAD OF BULL spun from the club. Your a marketing disaster!!! £20 was overpriced for a friendly.... That could have quite easily been a full house if lower prices were touted... However, with the way they **** up with trying to get people in the ground no wonder they had the prices up to scare people off - they wouldn't have been able to cope...

I didn't see it or pay £20 to go to the game and by the sounds of it I didn't miss much! Such a shame that i think.

Again, £20 sounds a bit too expensive for these type of games - what do others think?

They had announced they sold 3000 tickets before the match, never 5000.

I dont see how the club can be blamed for people queing up at the ticket office. It has been mentioned several times on the OS and in the ET it was pay on the gate as normal and you only need to go to the ticket office for the main stand. I also remember it being announced over the tannoy at least three times once in the ground prior to kick off you dont need to que there, so if people carry on queing thats their own stupid fault.

As for the match, I felt it was a very worthwhile work out and I am now a lot more optimistic for the new season as I was before. Our front three are going to rip many league 1 teams to pieces.

Certain areas of LRE are an embarrassment to the club though, I dread to think what the conversation was like on the West Ham team bus home.
