CHRIS Whelpdale believes the arrival of right-wing rival Sergio Torres at London Road will inspire him to greater heights this season.
Whelpdale was one of the success stories of Posh's promotion-winning League Two campaign last term, making 34 appearances in his debut campaign in the Football League.

The £150,000 capture of Torres would appear to threaten the chances of a similar record this season. Posh boss Darren Ferguson has even hinted he might use Whelpdale as a full-back.

But Whelpdale said: "Sergio is obviously a good player, but I think his arrival will help me.

"Competition for places is good for the side as it proved last season when I was up against Adam Newton and Josh Low.

"Sergio will keep me on my toes which can only be a good thing.

"I played well at right wing against Rochdale in Spain at the weekend. I got on really well with Russell Martin down the right hand side.

"The manager has spoken to me about playing full-back and I played there in one of the friendlies in Spain and really enjoyed it.

"If I play as many games this season as I did last I will be very happy."
